The world famous Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907. Located on the 7th floor of Macy's on State Street, the Walnut Room was the first restaurant ever opened in a department store. Conveniently located in the heart of the Chicago theater district, the Walnut Room is an excellent choice to take a break from shopping or for a meal and a glass of wine before the show.
Enjoy our Famous Mrs. Herring's Chicken Pot Pie and other well known favorites on the menu.

Kudos to Miss Brittany, awesome customer service! Loved sitting next to the tree. Magical tradition for my sweet teen girl! (Get the short ribs, they were amazing).

Love the tradition of the Walnut Room but some of it is tired and unkept. Bathroom was unpleasant and messy. Appreciated the prices being fair and reasonable for a family.

The atmosphere was so festive, and, of course, the Christmas tree was beautiful. The service was excellent. The food was was so good and reasonably priced. And the princesses/fairies walking around getting wishes at the table was a nice touch and got our whole table conversing about our dreams and hopes for the year. Macy’s and the Walnut Room in downtown Chicago is always a favorite of ours!

Don’t go here thinking you ate going to get a gourmet meal. The food is good but not exceptional. The experience is being in this absolutely beautiful space and to continue the tradition that has been going on for so many years. We had an absolutely beautiful evening with our granddaughters and we will go again next year!!

The Walnut Room is not like it used to be, and the whole holiday experience started to go down the tubes when reservations were made mandatory. My family and I have been going to The Walnut Room every Christmas season since the early 90s when both my daughters were babies. Since they have grown, we have included their friends and now their husbands and children. We used to actually enjoy going there in early December before the holiday shopping season started to get crazy, getting in line and waiting forever for a table near the tree. Now, with this reservation only system, even when trying to secure reservation the day reservations open up for holiday dining, we're lucky to get a reservation in November. This year I wasn't able to get a reservation for anything closer than November 20th. This has literally taken the fun and excitement out of this experience, a family tradition for over 30 years now. So now the Walnut Room experience during the holidays is just like trying to get a concert ticket for a favorite artist where you're lucky to get a ticket in the back row, if at all. Add to this the ridiculous "shrinkflation" going on with the menu items that continue to get smaller and smaller while the prices go higher and higher. The downfall of this experience started when Marshall Field's was sold to Macy's, which killed the tradition of the great Christmas windows along State Street. To call Macy's current Christmas windows a ghost of what Field's used to put on would be paying Macy's way more of a compliment than they deserve. So, hopefully, next year with each and every one of my family members readying themselves to jump on the reservations the minute they open up, hopefully we'll be able to get something closer to where we would like to book. But I'm not counting on it. Thus another great Chicago tradition is in the process of dying a very slow and sad death. What a shame.

Servers and staff were welcoming ,efficient and friendly. Love the reservation system you have implemented over the past few years. A visit here for the holidays brings back 58 years of nostalgia for me. So many wonderful memories . So happy I could still get the “Fields Special”…even if it’s not on the menu! Thanking you all for another memorable experience!

It was our first visit here, and we are already planning on making this an annual tradition. My daughter had a truly enchanting experience with the fairies, her wishing stones, and glitter. This memory will undoubtedly remain etched in her mind for the rest of her life. The food was good and aesthetically pleasing. The ambiance and the exceptional service provided by our waiter further enhanced our overall experience. We even attempted to create our own snowman; although it may not have turned out as intended, it still held a special charm for us.
