Great food - bit of a delay in between courses , people sat for 25 mins waiting to get served Waiter didn’t know what wines they served - shame really- won’t be back for a while 😞

Extensive and interesting menu with plenty of gluten free options, helpful advice from server regarding options. Good wine list and not over expensive . No delays in being served, food very well presented with sensible portion sizes. All well cooked and flavoursome. The Eton Mess with strawberries and pistachio pieces was the best I've ever eaten. Only one suggestion for improvement, the gluten free bread was the plain white sliced loaf. There are many options for better bread, Scharr brown ciabatta roles, long shelf life, or genius wholemeal buns which can be reheated from frozen in seconds. Overall an excellent experience, we will certainly return on any future visit to York.

The staff were lovely, but we thought that the food was small portions for the price. The wine was expensive

We had a lovely 18th birthday experience. The food and portion sizes were perfect. We will defo visit again.

A great setting, with friendly service and an excellent menu. My partner is vegetarian and all the veggie options were highlighted in green, making the menu really easy to scan. The food was well priced and very tasty. We had a 3 course meal, a bottle of wine and some drinks and paid less than £150 so excellent value.

We have a nice table in the window . Service was a little slow and when we asked if we could substitute items on dishes it too a while for this to be agreed by the waitress .

Front of house person , unfriendly and indifferent Roast beef seemed to be flat iron steak rather than off a joint and served raw ( and I mean raw) the exception of barely beige around the edges and the whole meal was closer to lukewarm than warm The Star has changed from its early years. Sadly this wasn't food cooked with love

The evening began with a very cold welcome. The lady at the reception desk, who was typing throughout and would not engage with eye contact, said ‘how can we help?’. U would have expected a warmer welcome and it was obvious we were arriving for dinner. After 30 seconds of further typing she grabbed menus, still no eye contact, and told us to follow her. We were taken to an ante room at the back of the restaurant where there was a large (circa 10-12 people) table containing majority small children with crayons, games and books. A few (not enough) adults were there and there were a couple of tables for 2 in the room. We were given one of them. We said we didn’t want to sit in there (it was like a playroom) and she seemed surprised. We were told they didn’t have another table other than the one literally at the door of the restaurant. Even she recognised that wasn’t a good table. She then took us upstairs to a small mezzanine and we were given a table up there. This area is away from the main atmosphere of the restaurant and we did feel that it was a disappointment in terms of ambience - we could have been anywhere! The menu is a bit weird too but we did find choices on the specials menu thankfully. The service was good on the mezzanine and we made the best of it. However I don’t think we will ever go back given the table we had and the fact that we were basically told we had to take it! The restaurant would have been different I guess if we had been allowed to sit in the main section but we all pay the same at the end of the night!
