Situated next to York train station, the Refectory Kitchen & Terrace sits comfortably in the Grade II listed Principal York hotel which dates back to 1878. This latest addition, which includes an outdoor terrace, comes from award-winning architects Michaelis Boyd, whose previous work includes London’s Groucho Club and Soho House Group.

The restaurant sources the very best seasonal ingredients, with an emphasis on local Yorkshire produce. Being local at heart is the order of the day at the Refectory Kitchen & Terrace, with a classic Sunday roast and seasonal dishes that are bursting with flavour, whilst championing the world-class quality of ingredients found throughout Yorkshire and the Yorkshire dales.

    Indulge your inner child and adventure into the mouth-watering world of chocolate with our enchanting afternoon tea inspired by York’s well-renowned history with chocolate. York once known as ‘the chocolate city’ dating back almost 300 years, at its peak, over 14,000 people were employed in the city’s famous chocolate factories - including Rowntree’s site at Haxby Road, which opened in 1890, and was so big it had its own fire brigade, and Terry’s Chocolate Works factory near York Racecourse, which opened in 1926. Inspired by history, Executive Chef Aaron Craig has created and developed a truly magical indulgence of mouth-watering flavours using some well-known classic inspiration from the nation’s favourite chocolates.

                                                        Came for afternoon tea for my nanna an early birthday treat, we all loved it, everything was amazing! The 2 girls that were on shift 2pm onwards on the 25th July were amazing sorry I didn’t catch there names. The food was Absolutely delicious. Would 100% come back. Thank you so much again.                                                         We were staying at the Principal Hotel and had dinner in The Refectory on our first night. The restaurant was quiet. We had a pleasant welcome and thoroughly enjoyed our starters. The main course (pork chop) was marred by sitting on a huge portion of red cabbage but otherwise very tasty. While we were eating our main courses, around 8.30pm, the staff first cleared all the lit candles from the unoccupied tables (i.e. the majority) and then removed the napkins and cutlery. They didn't start sweeping the floor or putting chairs on tables but we felt unwelcome and decided not to have a dessert or coffee. When we left, a door had to be unlocked to let us back into the hotel. This behaviour seems to us to be totally inappropriate in a fairly expensive restaurant and we would not use The Refectory again or recommend it.

                                                        The afternoon tea and food was excellent. However it was a shock to arrive to find despite adding two children to the booking via the open table form the restaurant only expected two adults. This meant we were moved out of thr garden room and this took some time to set up. The drinks of tea and hot chocolate were slow to come. Once I discussed the situation with the manager service speeded up. She apologised and we appreciated the complimentary glass of Prosecco. I think the problem is with the booking form and the garden room can be busy.

                                                        We had trouble finding where we were supposed to go - the Refectory Terrace was where we thought we had booked, however the doors were locked and there was no one around to ask. A billboard or similar at the entrance would have been useful. We had the afternoon tea in the open room adjacent to the hallway entrance which was pleasant enough but also being used as a meeting room and creche. The food was nice but very few sandwiches, the sweet selection was very sweet, it would have been nice to have had a balance. There was one waitress who was very difficult to understand and we had to try to catch their eye to ask for a top up of tea. Everywhere was clean and tidy which was good. The building itself is lovely and close to the railway station so a great location for friends travelling from different directions.

                                                        The afternoon tea wasn’t served in the refectory kitchen and terrace it was in what felt like the lobby with people coming and going. There was a wedding taking place and so the guests were in and out taking pictures. The savoury food items were nice but the cakes felt stale. The whole experience was disappointing from the setting to the food and didn’t feel worth the money.

                                                        We enjoyed our afternoon tea eventually when the wedding guests left the garden room. Up until that point the noise level was loud and the room busy. We were just pleased that we hadn’t booked an earlier time slot. Staff were excellent.

                                                        Food was great, and the room was lovely! Service let it down slightly as it was pretty slow. Nobody really checked on us or asked if we needed anything else.

                                                        Lovely few hours catching up with friends in a relaxing and very comfortable garden lounge. Beautiful views of the gardens. Tasty afternoon tea.

                                                        I had booked the Principal Hotel for afternoon tea for a special occasion. I had expected a nice experience due to the high standard of hotel. The service was very poor, the member of staff was not attentive, and forgot a number of things when ordering, such asking for a bottle of water twice and in the end we gave up and didn’t have any. I would have been more understanding if they were really busy but that did not seem the case, the waitress just didn’t seem to be bothered. The sandwiches as part of the afternoon tea were ok. The sweets were the best bit. It’s a real shame as it’s a beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting.
