York once known as ‘the chocolate city’ dating back almost 300 years, at its peak, over 14,000 people were employed in the city’s famous chocolate factories - including Rowntree’s site at Haxby Road, which opened in 1890, and was so big it had its own fire brigade, and Terry’s Chocolate Works factory near York Racecourse, which opened in 1926. Inspired by history, Executive Chef Aaron Craig has created and developed a truly magical indulgence of mouth-watering flavours using some well-known classic inspiration from the nation’s favourite chocolates.

We were there for afternoon tea which was ok. Have been before when we thought it was a very special experience, however this time didn't think that, it was very mediocre.

Poor service sat down at 19.25 pm didn't recieve a drink or any service till 19.50pm when the staff came to take our order he seemed preoccupied no eye contact wasn't listening to me kept asking me to repeat what I'd said was looking over at the table behind us the whole time a very long wait for food no organisation just very disappointed the whole dining experience and the stay at the hotel overall was disappointing the room was changed it was shabby ripped furniture paid for breakfast next morning then an extra 5 pounds for it to come up to our room it never arrived we ate out at the Duke of York in the end for breakfast we was deflated by the whole experience and it was a special occasion

The afternoon tea in the garden room consisted of flavourless sandwiches (with the exception of the smoked salmon) and mediocre pastries. The service was terrible as we were ignored for 45 minutes after our food arrived and not offered a second pot of tea. The tea pots are very small and the tea became cold quickly. We were seated near a window and found the room temperature there quite cold.

Chose the Garden Room at the Principle for Afternoon Tea to celebrate my mother's 90th Birthday. Excellant food, service and ambience. Waiters were extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They even provided our 2 year old with a child's afternoon tea with a selection of lovely sandwiches and cake. Will definitely make a return visit and highly recommend.

I was able to book at a time the restaurant is not open. I recommend that you cross reference with the restaurants opening times and call to double check if possible as if you arrive when its closed (like I did!) you'll have to find a place to eat in York last minute without a booking!

Chocolate tea! All dessert items had a chocolate component. White chocolate scone was tasty. Service didnt stop by to check on us.

Although I had a booking, the place was not open on the day. We sat in the garden room The choice of food wad limited, especially as I have dietary requirements. Service was ok, but clearly not very knowledgeable. Rather disappointed

The place wasn’t even ready for our 11.00am booking , 15 20 minutes wait , the food was just Luke warm left overs from breakfast , Hash browns rock hard , bacon and sausage the grease had come to the surface where it had obviously all been left on a hot plate from the breakfast an hour earlier, absolutely awful, for a Hotel of this standard , it should be ashamed of itself . Even the coffee was just warm , the staff really couldn’t be bothered, left most of the food and coffee and went .

Table booked for 2pm. Shown to table, both chair seats were stained. Drinks arrived which were not hot. At 2.25 we were informed there had been a mix up and our order was on its way. Food not worth 29.00 each. When we went to pay I was told 72.50 when it should have been 58.00. Worked out the service charge was 7.25 which had been added on per person instead of total amount. Paid the 58.00.

Booked afternoon tea for a 50th birthday. Went for the prosecco option. Food was lovely. Sweet and savoury and actually could not finish so was given a box to take away the leftovers. Lovely room to have the afternoon tea and service was friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend.
