Sitting on the corner of Hilton and Tariff street in Manchester’s lively Northern Quarter, The Pen and Pencil takes its name and inspiration from the infamous mid-20th Century bar on East 45th Street in New York, which was popular with newspaper journalists and ad men – the original ‘Mad Men’.

Open seven days a week from 10am until late, the restaurant and bar not only offers a variety of beverages including cocktails, beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks, but focuses on its strong day time offering with great breakfast, brunch and lunch options as well as quality coffee and freshly blended smoothies.

The Pencil and Pencil has an array of events throughout the month with a resident DJ to get the party started every weekend, a weekly quiz night on a Tuesday, and its sell-out Bottomless Brunches! It also offers of rooms for private hire for networking meetings, private parties and launch events.

I love this restaurant, but a few issues need addressing as I feel the standards have slipped a bit. Mens toilet. The cubicle on the right. Toilet seat disgusting and hanging by a thread. Also when in there the lights went off. Only activated when you went back to the sink . Embarrassing. After 4pm the staff changed and they weren’t as attentive as the girl who served us all afternoon. Had to go to the bar to get attention for more drinks. Food amazing as always we loved it. But I had to draw the toilet to your attention. Sorry

Went on a Monday as it’s 50% off food when pre booked. Food was nice and great value for money. But sadly the service weren’t great. Staff seemed a little pushy to order. And took forever to get the bill and to pay. It wasn’t a busy day either which was a shame.

Excellent service, we were seated straight away and our drinks order taken, food was amazing. Will definitely be back the next time we are in Manchester.

The food and cocktails were really great, but the music was a little too loud and honestly the ambience doesn’t look diner friendly on entry - more like a sports bar.

Amazing find great pub frendly staff Laura is a real asset to the pub we called the friday for a drink and she told us how good the food was we went back again the saturday . The service was attentive and not rushed at all. food freshly cooked and really nice especially the buttermilk chicken ther was even a pre show party as well before the liam gallagher concert with clint noon on the decks and it was free entry

Worst meal ever. Served people that arrived after us first , they also complained about food and sent stuff back. Waited hour plus for meal to arrive. Had to chase order up to get meal. Arrived with wrong order Took incorrect away and brought correct one Arrived cold all four meals One person ate with fingers not enough cutlery on table. Added the incorrect meal to bill (5 main courses on a table of 4). Complained to manager who halved food bill. Server slammed down bill and rude whilst we paid Later we checked receipt to find they had added the additional main at £14.50 to bill . At least I have this fantastic anecdote to tell everyone.
