Located in downtown Richmond's historic Shockoe Slip, The Hard Shell Restaurant is known to locals as one of the best seafood restaurants in town. With a new fresh look; The Hard Shell features sleek booths, lots of light and a vibrant city feel. The Hard Shell has Richmond's widest variety of fresh and local seafood. Menu items include signatures such as filet and lobster, shrimp and scallops, lump crab cakes. Patio request honored when possible but tables are first come, first served. The Hardshell is on our goto list when visiting Richmond. The seafood is always fresh and well prepared. Service is excellent. Tina was our server this trip and was attentive without being invasive. Our courses came out in order, and timely. The oysters were fresh and tasted great. The rockfish was very good and well presented on the dish. Our son had the crabcake and lobster and raved about his dish. The Hard Shell retains is top spot on our goto list for Richmond.

I’ll sum it up in one word: OUTSTANDING. The food was delicious and the service was Impeccable. Our server Christian was AMAZING! He was very personable, fun, engaging and we will go back just to see him. Best Birthday Day Dinner Ever!!

We have gone to the Hard Shell annually for our anniversary for several years. Sadly, this year was a bit disappointing. I had the filet and lobster with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The asparagus was woody and over cooked. I ordered the steak medium rare and it was undercooked. The lobster was cooked perfectly and not rubbery. Husband had the crab cakes and while he enjoyed them I found them a little strong (but I am sensitive to fishy tastes and odors). In fact, the restaurant smelled fishy upon entering. I didn't send the steak back as I ate around the edges and my husband enjoys rare steak. At the end of the meal I told the server not to box up the remaining asparagus because it was woody, and to their credit, the manager came to our table and offered to box up a replacement vegetable. Overall, the food was under seasoned and we needed to add salt, but had to ask for a replacement salt shaker because the two we tried were clogged up with humid salt. And a fly was buzzing around the entire time. Our server Katie was very attentive and was the bright spot in our visit. For the price of the meal we expected better. Neither of us came away saying, "That was delicious!"
