The Duncombe Arms is a beautiful, traditional country pub situated at the heart of the lovely rural village of Ellastone on the Staffordshire / Derbyshire border. Located on the edge of the Peak District near the towns of Ashbourne and Uttoxeter it is a great place to visit providing a delightful setting in which to enjoy a drink, some lovely food, as well as a chat with friends or family.

Come inside and enjoy a roaring log fire, sample our excellent range of beers and wines or enjoy fabulous food from our award-winning chef Jake Boyce. Or in the summer you can laze in our large garden overlooking the view to Worthy Island Wood.

We had Sunday lunch here and the food was excellent. Despite being super busy the staff were attentive and just about enough time between courses. We thoroughly enjoyed it and the tarte tatin was delicious

Despite having heard really good things about the ‘Duncombe Arms’ we left feeling deflated and disappointed! Myself and wife decide to visited the ‘Duncombe Arms’ with our children to celebrate my birthday. Upon arrival we’re allocated seating directly opposite the main entrance. The cold wind blowing through the entrance due to the sheer number of guests coming in was uncomfortable, we asked to be moved however all other seats were taken. As a result my son and wife choose to keep their coats on. We then proceeded to place our drinks order with ‘front of house’ however these took over 40 minutes to arrive and actually came out after our food had been delivered. When mentioned to the waitress she seemed disinterested and blamed it on a computer glitch. The food itself was tasty however portion sizes extremely small. I chose the beef and my daughter had the children’s chicken nuggets and we were both feeling hungry at the end. During the meal no one came to ask how the meal was nor offer to take a further drinks order. At the end we’re presented with the bill and asked to pay a discretionary service charge of 10%. I discussed the poor service and explained to the waiter that we would not be paying this, the waiter accepted this and we left. Overall very poor and wouldn’t recommend based on our visit.

We dined here for my wife’s birthday and had not been for about a year. It was excellent from the moment we walked through the door and the birthday card and candle were nice touches. The food is of a very high standard and even after 3 courses we did not feel bloated. A pleasant red wine from south west France proved a perfect accompaniment. We will not leave it so long before we return.

Fabulous Sunday lunch. Beef mouth-wateringly tender & the shared tart tatin dessert was perfect! Service was excellent, with attentive and friendly staff. We would definitely recommend.

This was a birthday lunch and I was made to feel very special. A birthday card was placed on the table, a nice touch. We dined off the A La Carte menu. The menu is not extensive which, in my opinion, is to be recommended. The cheese soufflé was delicious, light and fluffy and very tasty. Our main courses were both fish dishes which were beautifully presented and equally delicious. Dessert did not disappoint! After our meal I was presented with a candle , chocolate Happy Birthday and delicate sweets, such a thoughtful gesture. Service was friendly and efficient. All in all, the quality of food and service was excellent and we will certainly return . Thank you Duncombe Arms for such a lovely lunch!

We were welcomed and shown to our table promptly. Menus arrived soon thereafter and a bottle of cold tap water with glasses. Menus including drinks list arrived quickly and a young lady came over to ask our choices. After an appropriate wait our drinks orders were taken and they arrived quickly. The chosen bottle of wine was served professionally. We placed our orders, after about 10 minutes another young lady came over to apologise in advance and informed us that as the place was very busy, there will be a further wait and complimentary bread, butter and olive oil was served. The food was excellent and of very good portion. Our meal was ended with coffe and petit fours. All in all a very enjoyable experience. Will definitely visit again and recommend Duncombe Arms to friends

Very easy going venue for a lovely meal. Was quiet when we went but know it to have a very lively atmosphere in the evenings. Excellent food.

Three of us ate here on Tuesday Sept 17. It was a late decision to eat out. Using the online facility to find a table was great. We only had a different main course and all were excellent. The portion were ideal for us. Service was a little slow but staff were polite and friendly. The selection of wine by the glass was satisfactory and the wines chosen was enjoyable. The two ladies decided to have a dessert - baked Alaska- which was scored as superb. Overall a very pleasant and enjoyable experience.

The food and service was very good the atmosphere and the place it’s self is very very nice , my only gripe was the service charge which was £15.00 I certainly don’t mind giving a tip but I don’t agree with the service going onto the drinks also I’ll be back
