Went for Sunday roast. Overall it was very tasty but I felt it was expensive for what it was. The roast beef, despite being flavoursome, was definitely on the tough side, so much so that it was difficult to cut, and the “roast” potatoes were either roasted in a vat of oil or fried post roasting as they had a suspiciously hard shell. The pudding were simple and delicious (crème brulé and pavlova). Like I said, it was nice and certainly not worth complaining about directly to the staff, but at £91 for 2 roasts, 2 puddings and 2 glasses of house wine with a 12.5% service charge it felt like it was in the pricey side.

An excellent meal and excellent service. We had high hopes, given the Michelin Bib Gourmand, but this exceeded expectations. Highly recommend!

Food was excellent. Service professional and attentive. This was our second visit to The Chequers. Our first time we were in the pub and didn’t appreciate there was a separate dining room upstairs. This time we were seated upstairs where the room is spartan with an open view of the kitchen. The atmosphere is so much different as was the temperature- the heat from the kitchen was too much. Once again the food was exceptional but I much preferred being seated in the pub area on the ground floor.

Sad to see our favourite local lose its spark! Food is nice and location lovely however an atmosphere with 12 screaming teenagers unbearable. We offered to wait a number of times and were met with attitude and zero customer care. Apology, smile or an offer to cancel our booking so we could have gone elsewhere would have gone a long way! Such a shame, previous management would have dealt with it beautifully!

Tricky one this as we have been to Chequers twice this year. Our first visit blew us away fantastic service and food. That’s why we went back - uh oh! This time 8 of us, maybe that was the difference, I dunno! We got seated downstairs- not my choice I’d go upstairs if possible as it’s more like a restaurant and less pub. The downstairs is louder - that’s fine it’s a pub. Service was good I think the staff did their best to serve us and help out. The problem, well if you have loads of Michelin logos arounds and awards don’t drop the ball. Our food was tepid at best the steaks rare - now they are flat iron so perhaps it’s not the done thing to ask how you want it cooked but for my dad to say “ this is too rare for me” isn’t great and we didn’t get asked for how we wanted it done. One plate was for Monkfish - not cheap - served cold & sent back. One salmon salad, a cold dish that came 10 mins after the rest of the food ??? The odd thing was our chips were red hot but the steaks tepid. The returned monkfish when done and served meant we had all finished our food so the lady eating the monkfish ate alone. The staff asked how things were, and I don’t ever lie about this stuff. So I told her “ steaks under and tepid” her reply was “wow that’s odd how come you didn’t send it back” Well the response to that is “ how come you didn’t serve it hot in the first place” . They did take the drinks off our bill even though most drank water, but a gesture I guess. I have no idea what went wrong but the timing was all over the place. If I’m paying 24 quid per steak dish get it right - if I’m paying 31 quid for monkfish don’t serve it cold and spend 20 mins redoing it , if I order a salad - why on earth did it come 10 mins after all the other food. Who knows but that’s what happened and it wasn’t great, disappointing given I know it can be amazing.

A great place to eat - excellent food, friendly service and chilled ambience. We went with my aging parents who dont find it easy to get out for a celebration meal but the Chequers team went out of their way to deliver a proper welcome. One of our party left their wallet on the table and I had a call 5 minutes later telling me - again, great customer service. Very highly recommended. A gem.

We absolutely loved the food and the atmosphere of this place, but the service left much to be desired. Before we entered the restaurant we called that we might be running a little late, and the gentleman on the phone was rude. We arrived on time, but were rushed to order from the moment we sat down. The two women who served us were okay, but it felt like they were pressured by another man working with them. He came to our table once or twice, and was reacting to simple requests like bringing a bit of olive oil for our bread in the most condescending way. This could have been a 5* experience, but the service made us feel uncomfortable and ruined it a little. We’d still go back for the food, but with caution.
