Everything was excellent, highly recommend the outdoor patio which is cute and much quieter than the main restaurant seating area. Definitely worth a visit!

Tremendous experience. We were impatient and hungry, so we showed up 30 minutes early, we offered to walk around if they couldn’t seat us, but they were able to easily accommodate us. My friend had been there before, but it was my fist time and they gave me an overview of the menu. . We were cautioned about the amount of food we ordered, making sure to let us know it was going to be a lot for two people. I really appreciated their honesty. We proceeded with the large order because everything sounded so good! We had the English Peas, Short Ribs, Spanish Octopus, Eggplant, Cauliflower, King Oyster Mushrooms, Oxtail Dumplings, Yellow Tail, Tomato and Peach Burrata, and Shellfish Pot. The octopus was tender and delicious. The yellow tail was better than we had at a highly rated sushi restaurant in the area. It was beautiful and so refreshing with the citrus elements and a little heat from the chilies. I personally loved the tomato and peach burrata. The standouts for me were the Eggplant, Cauliflower, and Shellfish Pot. I’ve never had an eggplant dish so interesting and delicious. I’d go back again and again for it. The cauliflower was so flipping good! The light batter reminded me of funnel cake at the Jersey Shore, with a perfect light but crispy and delicate sweetness with a wonderful fragrant element of lavender. The shellfish pot!!!!! The curry broth was probably the best I’ve ever had. The lemongrass was so fragrant and fresh, it was so very beautifully balanced. A little touch of sweet, with an herbaceous flair and that nice kick of heat. I would have slurped down that entire bowl of broth had I not been in public. They paired and paced 6 courses perfectly, over the course of 2 hours. I was content after the sixth course, but couldn’t resist the strawberry ricotta pastry with honeycomb ice cream, putting me over the edge. 🤣 This is a standout restaurant. And that’s coming from someone who’s been in the business for a very long time. Kudos to you.

Absolutely a wonderful experience! We are from Irvine is worth the trek to Santa Monica. Every dish was was delicious and well executed. We ordered 8 dishes for 3 people and ate family style which is encouraged. (Octopus skewers, oxtail dumplings, grilled mushrooms with beans, bone marrow, grilled asparagus, duck breast, black cod, pastry with strawberries and honey comb ice cream). The server coursed out the meal so timing was perfect out of the kitchen. The wine selection is creative and fairly priced (had a bottle of the sparkling Nebbiolo rose. Highly recommend it). The only slight negative was the sun directly in our faces coming through the windows as the sun set. We will definitely be back on a regular basis.

Travel around the world in a dinner! Another terrific culinary experience at Tar & Roses! Nice patio seating, friendly & efficient servers/staff, knowledgeable sommelier, & of course, talented chefs! The crabcake is full crab no added fillers and fried fish - both asian influenced & delicious ( Not typical goopy asian soy sauce). Flatbread is interesting, housemade gnocchi fresh, savory & light. Excellent wine choices.

This restaurant is fine. If you like overtweezed garnishes of a bygone era and having minimal portions for maximum prices. All the flavors were good - but nothing captivating or exciting. The price point I’m sure reflects the high cost of rent/labor/food and yet a more satisfying meal is available at any local taco stand or hole in the wall mom and pop. The liver mousse was under seasoned, limited portion, over priced and plated with a precious precision of a top chef season 5 contestant. The ox tail dumplings were just warmed, minimally glazed in jus and and clearly had been cooked in batches and then held for pick up. The eggplant was, as my guest noted, something anyone with a good pan, chili oil, soy sauce, and crispy garlic or shallots could prepare at home for $3 The hamachi crudo was adorned with some smear of avocado and supremes of various citrus - basic, under seasoned, and portioned at under 2oz of total fish. The service was attentive but it was clear that after my guests and I were only interested in having light starters with some nonalcoholic drinks that our server was perturb about our limited spend. Restaurants like this are banking on an endless flow of well healed foodies who are still enamored with bells and whistles vs a substantive experience.

For the food, I can assure you that all of our dishes are cooked and plated to order, and had I been made aware of the lack of seasoning on any dishes I would have done my best to rectify the situation. While we try our best to exceed or at least meet expectation, at times we fall short. I'm glad that you found the service to be attentive, however, it is our policy that every guest should be treated like a VIP whether they are joining us for a full meal, or just a few bites. We live in DC and dined here several years ago (mid-teens?) and couldn’t wait to return. Very happy to see T&R survived the pandemic. This visit was a great as your first visit and will return the next time we’re in the area. While dining alfresco was nice and the streetery was better than many, the only reason for the ambience rating is it was loud from the passing emergency vehicles with blaring sirens. The dinning room is still very nice though.
