Priding ourselves on our motto ‘Famous for fish’ Smiths Restaurants is a name that has become synonymous with fine dining and quality, attentive service. Our restaurants are located in Ongar Essex (just off the A414) and Wapping in central London (near Tower Bridge). Both restaurants boast an extensive menu of fresh fish that we offer to cook in a variety of ways to suit every palette. We also offer locally sourced meat dishes to accommodate those who prefer their food terra firma. To compliment the quality of our food we have worked closely with well renowned independent wine merchants to ensure we have a selection of wines that are the perfect accompaniment to every meal. The only problem you may have a Smith’s is being spoilt for choice.

From walking through the door to leaving staff were attentive and helpful. Plenty of choice on the fixed price menu and a la carte. Good mocktail options. Didn’t feel rushed at any time.

If you like fish this is the place to be. Fine dining for a reasonable price if you have the lunchtime set menu. Enough choice for everyone. Good, cheerful service and made our joint celebration of birthday and anniversary a very enjoyable and relaxed experience, without breaking the bank.

We have eaten here a great many times now - and not once have they dropped the ball. Food and service excellent, as always. Menu variety is fantastic too.

We had the set menu and were fairly disappointed as the food seemed mediocre. After paying we commented to a lady who I presume was a Line Manager that the service from some of the staff wasn't great and that the food didn't live up to our expectations for what we considered a Fine Dining restaurant. The Line Manager replied saying they don't consider themselves to be a Fine Dining restaurant (surprising given their price point) and that they cater to their main customer base who are 70 - 80 years old who want over cooked soft food. I also mentioned to the Line Manager that we asked the waitress taking our order how the vegetables were cooked and were told they were served soft which we made clear we didn't like and thus spoke to the waitress about other side dishes as an alternative, the Line Manager said we could have had vegetables cooked al dente but it was down to us to ask for this whereas given our comments to the waitress as she wasn't forthcoming on giving us this option the presumption was there was no other choice. We were subsequently told by the Line Manager that we must just be “some of those people” who simply don't like their restaurant, which seems surprising when we had even told her that we had spent £60 on taxis (£30 each way) and therefore had really invested on having an enjoyable evening and had heard rave reviews of their restaurant. I must add the Line Manager saying all this was strictly speaking very polite but their tone was terrible and you could tell she just wasn't interested and didn't care what we were saying whereas you would like to think a restaurant like this would appreciate some productive criticism.

Superb service form the staff even though there was a small delay with the main course. Food was great.

We had a lovely 3 course menu , each course was delicious , beautifully presented , and plentiful . The staff were attentive and helpful . We shall go back again .

Always a delight to eat at this 5 Star restaurant. We have been coming here for 40 years and have never once been unhappy with everything.

A great meal as always, I cant deny I am missing the oysters (I will get over it) but the menu changes are very good. As regards to the service, I am putting a different take on this, a fair majority of the floor staff are under the age of 21. As an "older" person many of my generation are very quick to find fault in the younger people of today. I have to say this is far from the truth at Smith's, the waiting staff are absolutely first class, they are enthusiastic, attentive and pay attention detail which makes all the difference. In addition to this they work very well as a team. I have too single out Harley here, she is incredibly efficient and is a credit to herself, her mother as well as Smith's. I have no doubt this young lady will go far in her chosen career. Well done to Smiths, the kitchen, back of house and management do a great job.
