Located in San Diego’s vibrant downtown, Zama brings Latin American cuisine with an Asian infusion in a captivating space inspired by the Amazonian jungle. Zama will focus on Latin American cuisine with the addition of Peruvian and Mexican dishes like Carpaccio, Agua Chile and Tartar and a Japanese-inspired sushi bar created by Chef Tayuka Kudo (formerly of Nobu and Lumi) against the extravagant backdrop of the lush jungle-inspired space.

Cool atmosphere—seating, lighting, decor, etc. Music is very loud—has a club feel. Staff was friendly. Food came out fast. My biggest disappointment is that the menu didn't match what the restaurant is pitched as—"Latin American-Japanese Fusion." There was definitely the "Japanese" part—the sushi rolls were very good! But I expected Latin menu items and couldn't really find anything that was truly a "Latin" dish, save for the ceviche appetizer—we were quite confused. Adding to the identity crisis of this restaurant is the music selection—it's neither Latin nor Japanese. We got the sense that it was Middle Eastern-influenced (?). All-in-all—very nice staff, food was good (not quite hitting "amazing"), but an overall curveball experience based on what we were expecting.

Good excellent. Service not great. Way too loud. We had to shout at each other across the table and we were there somewhat early.

Love the restaurant vibe and decore and music playing definitely nice place to grab a drink but food is over priced sushi roll for 30 dollars it’s insane and not impressive at all. I think best dish was ceviche and shrimp appetizers but still 3 shrimps for 30 bucks .. I mean best spot for drinks . For food I would not recommend but for ambience yes.

What was supposed to be a celebration, turned out to be a complete disaster. The waitress Sara had a terrible attitude with our party, she was being very difficult with splitting the bill. I don’t recommend Sara at all. The food was fair but not worth the price, and the music was extremely loud we couldn’t even have a conversation.

Super cue interior, fun music, drinks were not consistent. We ordered 2 rounds of the same thing and they tasted totally different unbalanced. When we brought it up to the server they said we were wrong!!! Don't order the beef tartare it was gray hamburger meat that didn't even hold together was totally not made to order! The price point and the food / drinks were ridiculous for the quality. We will not return......

The sushi is exceptional, the drinks are good and the hostess seated us an hour before our reservation. A great date night, our third time here and we will return. Dennis

We made a reservation but still ended up waiting around 45 minutes for our table. While waiting, we had a couple of drinks at the bar, which were well-made and enjoyable. Once seated, we ordered the mashed potatoes with crab, Brussels sprouts, and shared the 40oz tomahawk steak. Unfortunately, the Brussels sprouts were disappointing. They tasted boiled with no char and had only a light balsamic drizzle. My fiancée and I love trying Brussels sprouts at different places and rating them, but these were honestly the worst we've ever had. We requested the tomahawk steak medium-rare, which it was, but it turned out to be tough, dry, and lacking flavor. The mashed potatoes were the best part of the meal but still just average, and we could barely taste the crab. To be honest, the food quality felt comparable to a Chili’s but with the prices of a Ruth’s Chris, which feels disrespectful to those willing to pay premium prices for a quality meal. Additionally, the music was very loud, making it difficult to have a conversation. The ambiance was impressive, and the drinks were solid, but I spent over $300 on six drinks, a tomahawk steak, Brussels sprouts, and mashed potatoes. Overall, a huge disappointment.
