When envisioning our restaurant, the team at Visitation Hotel knew we’d need to craft something truly special; a welcoming space where guests and locals alike could enjoy locally sourced cuisine, inspired cocktails, and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

The result is Wye Oak Tavern.

    The PEI oysters were very mild and very small; the presentation was excellent! The crabcake was well prepared with delicious lump crab meat. The prime rib was superior in taste and texture, cooked to wonderful medium rare. The sweet potatoes were very good with a truly distinctive sauce. The chocolate and dumpling desserts were creative and extremely well prepared. The atmosphere is very mixed - some unique and attractive decoration combined with interesting restorations. Nice preservation of the chapel’s stained glass! The repurposed chapel’s altar area as a bar is unusual esthetically and perhaps a controversial use of religious architecture, art, and symbols. The walls are painted with dull gray and very somber woodland images. The noise level was harsh and a severe problem for our conversation - very inappropriate for upscale dining. The canned music was jumpy and intrusive. Management could not offer a quiet area and initially resisted our complaints about the noise, in spite of one member’s of our party using a hearing aid. Overall, there would seem to be essential inconsistencies with trying to be a noisy “tavern” within an historically religious chapel while featuring truly distinctive “fine dining”!

    Our server, Mary, was exceptional. The hostesses and their process were not impressive. Arrived several minutes early and were told we had to wait until our reservation time., others also, but for no apparent reason. Prime rib, ribeye steak and Brussels sprouts were perfectly delicious. We were not rushed through our meal. Will return but won’t arrive early 😉

    I took my husband for his birthday. The food was excellent. Best pot roast I’ve ever had in my life. He had the prime rib and said it was an excellent. Good choice of cocktails and wine. Great place for a special occasion.

    Dinner was excellent. Food and service were all top notch. Craig our waiter was always there when we needed but never felt like he was hovering. He knew the menu inside and out and helped guide our dining choices. We had oysters, moved on to the smoked beets, then the rigatoni (al dente with a tomato sauce with a delightful spicy bite) for starters which came out perfectly paced. Dinner was prime rib (everything you want from prime rib ,juicy, seasoned and spot on mid rare) and pot roast (flavorful, tender and felt like home) with an order of French fries which were crispy, hot and perfect seasoned. Dessert was the apple dumpling which was crispy, hot and full of cinnamon with a divine scoop of ice cream. The only thing that I would change is where the hostess tried to seat us. We had a reservation for 530 and were taken to a two top that was overlooking the bus station. There were a total of 4 other dinners in the main dining area so not sure why we got such a garbage table. We asked to be moved to another table and while she did move us, her attitude was so sour, we almost left without having dinner. Other than a minor hiccup at the beginning, Craig made sure we had a fantastic night. It was also nice that the manager stopped by to see how dinner was, took our desert order and managed our leftovers. Bravo to a very nice evening out in Frederick.

    The food and atmosphere were good. The kitchen just needs to make sure that food is delivered to the customer while still hot. (Our steaks were lukewarm as were our cappuccinos.) The steaks are big; three of the four in our group took home "doggy bags" because they couldn't eat the entire steaks in one sitting.

    Chefs Bryan and Michael Voltaggio have provided Frederick with a great new restaurant. Great menu, great service, & one of the most unique ambience you will find in Maryland! 👍🏼👍🏼🥂🍻

    One of the best steak houses with healthy sides and salad options that doesn’t make you feel guilty even when counting your calories. Tried the dessert cheese cake which was so good and nothing like your traditional cheese cakes you experience. Very lite and not too sweet. Definitely will go back. I just wish they take you exactly as your reservation time since it took another 20 -25 minutes til we were seated.

    My daughter use to go to visitation academy for 3 years of middle school. Now it turned into a hotel and the chapel where they used to do service of light is not Wye Oak Tavern. It is bit surreal when we walked in to see the change , as we are familiar with the school layout. They did a great job to maintain the structure and character of the original building and yet makes it upscale and very interesting. The experience is delightful, the food service and environment is excellent. Highly recommend and will be back !
