The Winding Stair Bookshop & Café became a famous Dublin landmark in the 1970s and 1980s. Named after the Yeats poem and in honour of its winding staircase, it is overlooking the river Liffey, with an iconic view of the Ha'penny bridge. As a popular meeting place for writers, musicians and artists, it was a well known hub for debate and creativity with many poems written, novels penned and movies shot within its walls. In 2006, Elaine Murphy brought this much-loved spot back to life as a restaurant, championing seasonal, Irish produce. The bookshop, located on the ground floor, was retained, as were many of the old bookshelves, photos and memories. The room retains its timeless charm with stripped wood tables and floors, and Bentwood café chairs.The view remains as quintessentially Dublin as ever.
The food is good, old-fashioned home cooking, with produce sourced from artisans within the island. Drink sare local and international craft beers & wines from stellar producers.

Food was just ok. (Pork) dry. Dingle crab… over priced and just okay. Salmon was ok nothing special. The soup was the best menu item we had. No ambiance on the upstairs dining room. Dark as well. Couldn’t see my food or menu without using my iPhone flashlight.

I really don’t want to tell how wonderful this haven is because then it will become so popular that I won’t be able to get a table. But it is the most pleasant experience I have had in three weeks travelling around Ireland. The old world charm and quirkiness is most welcome. The staff warm and friendly. They like each other and enjoy their labours. The menu interesting with a variety Of unusual choices. With a special note to the selection of affogato. The wine selection perfect for a plethora of cuisines. The location is central and I highly recommend it for a great experience for a celebration and just a special treat. Sorry guys I hope this doesn’t cause a stampede to your doors

Second time here. We had halibut and two others had steak. All fabulous quality. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding and it was wonderful. Great atmosphere. Would recommend.

A lovely location with big windows overlooking the half penny bridge. Menu is small, but that's a good thing as there's plenty to like. Waiters are knowledgeable and quietly attentive. Would definitely go back

Discerning NYer: Quaint and charming ‘hidden’ spot overlooking river that doesn’t feel touristy. Food and service ✅ Highly recommend.

The charcuterie was solid but very plain for €20, one meat only. Ditto for the steak at€42. My partner's carpaccio starter was similar and the haddock. At these prices, I'd expect a premium experience. Ambience and service were super so I did enjoy the evening.

Tonight was my third dinner at the Winding Stair and as in the previous two times the food and service did not disappoint. I will surely becoming back

Nourriture excellente (entree : assiette de poissons fumes et rillettes, plats : angus, canard, haddock sauce au chèvre, dessert : bread and butter pudding). Serveurs très agréables. Relativement onéreux mais excellent
