Volta do Mar is the culmination of a journey of discovery the founders - Isabel and Simon - made over many years. They traced their family-history through food and travel, learning how people and culture integrated and inter-married across continents and over distant seas. What they discovered on that journey was an idea that later became a restaurant - Volta do Mar – meaning; to return from the sea.

Our menus at Volta do Mar showcase the delicious regional cuisine of Portugal and celebrate the international culinary confluences from its trading past. We cook Portuguese classics and dishes from the countries and places along its former trade routes, touching on Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Goa, Macau and Japan. We want to celebrate the diversity and interconnection of Portuguese food and culture across the globe.

This was our first visit and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Our choice was the fish stew which was delicious. I do think that the rice should have been included and not an optional extra. Our first course was the croquettes. The service was friendly and helpful. Sadly the restaurant was not busy as they deserve more customers. A lunch time fixed priced menu may be a draw and something to consider. Yes I would go back.

We had been wanting to visit this restaurant for some time, and were delighted to find them open in their new location. The food was very good with exciting variations on characteristic Portuguese cuisine, and the service friendly and attentive. We were a little disappointed that the fixed price menus we saw on the website were not in fact available, but were assured that the website has now been updated. We also felt very sufficiently compensated by being given a substantial discount on an excellent bottle of wine. We look forward to going again!

Although the website lists a set menu, we were told there was not one available and we had to order a la carte. Consequently our bill was considerably higher than we were budgeting for. They need to sort this out. Everything else about the place and food is wonderful, but we did feel let down.

What a find! There are not many Portuguese restaurants in London so it is good to find one close to where we live. Volta do Mar is a small, intimate restaurant in South Kensington and has a nice feel about it. The menu has Portuguese classic dishes as well as those from the countries and places along its former trade routes, which includes Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Goa, Macau and Japan. I chose the Market fish which was Hake, this was cooked to perfection. The Beetroot salad and the marinated Mackerel starters were superb. The wine list is Portuguese and well chosen with excellent wines from Madeira. Service was very attentive but not intrusive. It was great to see that they have outside tables that we will certainly enjoy in the summer time.

Delicious food. The burger was melt in the mouth. I would have preferred fries to crisps and there was some confusion over this as they were called chips. Excellent service.
