In a stunning Cornish Atlantic setting, just a mile from St Ives, Ugly Butterfly restaurant and bar offers spectacular views across one of the worlds most beautiful coasts, Carbis Bay. Ugly Butterfly showcases chef Adam Handling’s passion for converting locally-sourced, quality ingredients into beautifully-presented dishes, packed full of flavour. Offering an all-day dining experience, the Ugly Butterfly bar uses trims and offcuts from the ingredients used in the restaurant to create delicious drinks and bar snacks. This bar menu will illustrate that there is no such thing as food waste, much in the same way that there is no such thing as an Ugly Butterfly.

Whilst the food is the star of the show, the team are incredible, we sat at the chefs counter and all the love and passion shone through. Well done team!

It’s difficult to know where to start… this experience was outstanding from the minute we arrived until we left some hours later. The service was excellent, staff very friendly yet professional and able to answer all our questions on food and wine. Their knowledge was second to none. The food was delicious, we sat at the counter top so could watch the chefs do their thing! The attention to detail was notable. There was no chaos, all ran like clockwork. We were lucky that it has been a nice sunny day - the views out over the ocean were mesmerising. A very beautiful location. The staff went above and beyond to make this a memorable experience for my husbands birthday. I didn’t want to leave!

Every savoury course was superb. Would very highly recommend. Before we went I told them that I had an allergy to cocoa powder/ chocolate, they made me a special dessert which was excellent, however at the end of the meal we were served some ‘sweeties’ , as they called them, we were assured that there was no chocolate in them and surely enough there was. It just put the dampers in it for me as I will now suffer. We would definitely go back there and as I say would recommend, just make sure that they do not give you anything that you have an allergy to.

Wonderful afternoon tea. We enjoyed the food and the stories behind where it all came from. We had an amazing, uninterrupted view of the beach at Carbis Bay and the icing on the cake was being able to have our dog with us and bot have to leave her behind. The staff were very friendly and the tables were set out perfectly, close enough for a lovely ambience but far enough apart for privacy.

It was an interesting experience and most of the food was tasty and creative. Service exceptional though I have to disagree with imposing a discretionary 15% service charge. A £45 tip is very hefty. The wine was crazily expensive. £23 for a 250ml glass. And that was one of the cheaper ones. And the eclectic pop music, though much of it from my era of 60s and 70s was just too loud. I just prefer peace and quiet for fine dining so I wondered who this was aimed at? It made me think you wanted to attract the 30 somethings. The acoustic was not favourable to the ambiance as the poor staff had to raise their voices to explain the dishes and even then I could not really hear them properly. So although we enjoyed ourselves the hefty bill of £345 carried the caveats outlined above.

We visited the Ugly Butterfly for my partner's 50th birthday. Throughout the whole experience he was made to feel very special. I have eaten in a few places like this, but I think this might be my favourite. The location is incredible and the interior of the restaurant is very calm and relaxed. The food was outstanding, so many courses and such depth of flavours. We were particularly impressed by the no waste ethos and how this is reflected in the dishes. The staff were friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. The wine was delicious and the sommelier helped us to choose this. In addition to the menu, we added in some extra courses of oysters (fried and natural) as well as the cheese course and I would 100% recommend both of these.

Wonderful experience, the staff where informative and courteous, explaining each dish as it was served. The setting over looking the bay especially at sundown wes beautiful. The food was incredible each piece a work of art, not only to look at but too taste. A real treat. My only criticism would be the volume of the music, it would have been nicer if it was more in the background. But truly an amazing experience for the taste buds 🤩

If you want a gastronomic delight overlooking one of our most glorious beaches then this is the place for you. Food was exceptional as was the service. We had lunch so we didn’t miss out on the view. One of our all time favourite restaurants. Well done Adam!
