Chef Tyson Cole, vainqueur de la James Beard Foundation Award 2011 pour le meilleur chef Southwest - Merci à la famille Uchi et Uchiko et aux amis pour votre soutien! Uchiko, du japonais et voulant dire «enfant de Uchi", est le prochain projet de restaurant du célèbre chef executive et sushi master Tyson Cole. Situé dans le centre de Austin, ce second emplacement de Cole très convoité, Uchi présente la même excellence et ambiance énergique que l'original avec quelques ajouts notables. Uchiko mettra en vedette un nouveau menu avec le même style de cuisine fraîche et innovante que Uchi, une salle principale qui accepte les réservations tout au long de la soirée et un bar /café où il est possible de manger.

Our waitress Michelle was absolutely amazing in guiding us on how to order. Checked in on us frequently and her recommendations were spot on. We were also blown away by the taro icecream with the coconut crips and basil cubes. It was soo good.

The reservation was for 8:30 and we were not seated until 9:15. Our table had not cleared out so we were placed in the party room which had no ambiance and was extremely quiet. Not the table or experience that we requested. The reservation was for a birthday. Since we were sat late and waited for 45 minutes they served our food slow. So slow that we did not pay out until I requested the check and ask to hurry and expedite the last part of the order. We left the restaurant at 11pm. Here’s the best part… the server forgot to sing Happy Birthday to the birthday girl with the personalized cake. Cake was cut and sliced with no celebration. The worst experience at a Uchi restaurant. Between making the reservation with Ari and having her not so pleasant Customer Service attitude, I think you are better suited to celebrate and eat at other sushi restaurant. Don’t waste your time when there are so many other better suited restaurants. Well, we are talking about Austin and Customer Service is NOT their thing.

Unfortunately Uchiko, and its sister restaurants, have succumb to the natural progression of a highly successful restaurant. 1. Gets bought out, 2. Maximizes revenue 3. Mostly tourists start to visit and 4. The fatal blow of locals starting to go elsewhere. I walked in at 6:15PM on a Sunday and half the sushi bar was empty, as well as at least 6 tables… any long time customer would immediately know something had changed for that to be the case. (The sushi bar stayed fairly empty most of my meal). To be honest, it’s a 1000 cuts of small things, all aimed to maximize profit or cut expenses, that are noticed. 1. Goodbye to local carbonated water, hello to Pellegrino?? !!! 2. Menus are now in a resilient and cumbersome book, clearly they felt printing so many new paper menus to reflect the “dally” offerings was too expensive, And 3, the lack of further innovation just makes the expense for it all… feel unwarranted. I could go on with more small things that most of y’all won’t notice but you know… If you’re having to read a review of this place to make your decision then we know you’ll fit right in.

This was (I hope) an atypical experience but I wasn't impressed with our food or the service. When we asked for recommendations, our waiter listed almost everything on the menu and we were only a party of two. At least one of the dishes we had was very underwhelming with two sauces, neither of which paired well. We didn't eat a couple of the pieces at all which is saying something. We ordered another item that was inconsistent. My friend's piece was great, mine was not. At a 'regular' sushi restaurant, I'd probably just assume they were a so-so restaurant but I really expect more from the Uchi group - especially at this price point.

Made reservations and met a great friend for what I thought would be great time, great food, and great ambience. It didn’t turn out quite that way. We went early - 4:00 - to avoid the happy hour rush. Service was very slow at the beginning - even getting our drinks. and there were only a few other tables occupied. The main reason I wanted to go there was for the wagyu you cook on a hot rock at your table. The wagyu nigeri was fabulous! So good, we ordered an extra order! The wagyu for the hot rock, however, was not near as good. It was either not cut properly, not at room temperature, not a good cut of meat, or a combination of any of these - or none of them all. The problem was EVERY piece fell apart once on the hot rock. Each piece fell apart into AT LEAST three tiny pieces no matter how long (or short) it was on the rock. It was definitely a sad waste of money for that Wagyu. I should have said something but there were reasons I did not. But, the worse part was, despite our reservations, we were but in the dining area across from the bar next to the bigger brick wall, which was as cold as I have ever experienced in a restaurant in Austin. We mentioned how cold we were, and were told that it will really warm up once more people show up. More people showed up, a lot more, but it never got warmer. We both had to sit and eat in our coats.

This was an amazing experience. We opted for the somakase as our server Juan seemed very knowledgeable and interested in our preferences. He was fantastic! The dishes he chose were wonderful as were the cocktails he recommended. We loved this restaurant for it's beautiful decor and ambiance, cuisine and service. One of the best dining experiences we have had!
