The service was haphazard at best. When waiting to be seated, the whispering waiter took our names and wandered off with no communication - apparently we were supposed to follow him. When we got to the table I started to pull out my chair before he took over, and then apologised as I had to wipe crumbs off the seat before sitting. At that point another waiter took over to sort our food and drink order. He did advise the kitchen was about to close which may explain some of the following. The menu differed to the one online so the dishes I wanted to order weren’t actually available. I ordered the sea bass with saffron risotto, my husband the vegan Thai curry. When it arrived my dish was unseasoned and flavourless, my husbands was so salty it was almost inedible. It was quite late and we were so hungry we ate it anyway, and had anyone at all asked how our food was we would have told them but no one was in the least bit interested. It was actually quite difficult to get anyone’s attention at all. We decided to order a dessert to try to salvage the experience but the “white chocolate” vanilla and red fruit cheesecake was blatantly out of a supermarket packet, grainy texture, horrible taste and 2 crumbs of white chocolate buried under a thick layer of red goo. I wouldn’t have minded had the price reflected the quality but they are charging London prices because of the setting, whilst the food quality just doesn’t live up to the standards. Eat somewhere else.

Waited an hour for our food didn’t bother to wait for desert . Staff didn’t seem to know what they were doing

I was disappointed with the experience. Service was slow, atmosphere was fair. Cost for quality of food was average. Did not feel the service matched the cost. The bar service was similar.

Service was excellent as was the view into the gardens from where we were seated. Sadly the food was not very tasty other than my gravalax starter. My Caesar salad was very basic and unexciting. Both of my wife's dishes were very bland (tomato and buffalo mozzarella, and superfood salad). There was no dressing on the salad and we asked for some and received a jug of watery coconut milk. Neither of us are 'foodies' and virtually never complain but we were unusually disappointed.

Unfortunately the restaurant manager had an abrupt, unwelcoming manor when we arrived, although I’d booked a table. The superfood salad was mainly a large bowl of floppy lettuce, which would cost about 50p & was charged £15.50, which was outrageous. After informing the staff I got a sharp ticking off that I should have complained sooner but did get the cost of one salad taken off. Will not return although the hotel stay & spa facilities were a pleasant experience. The grounds & views are stunning.

Overall we had a lovely time at the Trevelyan restaurant but the food was disappointing. It felt very mass catered and appeared to have been pre-plated. This was a shame as the restaurant wasn’t overly busy. My dish was tasty but friends said theirs was very salty. We weren’t made aware that only two courses were included on the DB&B rate until we were asked about desserts and I feel this may have altered people’s choices if we’d known before hand. I’d read that guests were given £35 credit which easily covered 3 courses but this was not an option for us. We did have a lovely waiter called Hal who seemed to enjoy serving us and was very good at his job. All in all the dinner was not up to the standard I’d expect of a 4 star hotel but the experience was good because the service was good and I was in good company.
