Tortaria, in the Union Square neighborhood of New York City, crafts specialty Mexican sandwiches and celebrates tequila cocktails in its bright and modern eatery outfitted with retro knickknacks. Tortaria’s main bill of fare is tortas, traditional Mexican sandwiches on fresh baked, ciabatta-like bread. Some of the most popular varieties include the slow-roasted pulled pork with Chihuahua cheese, avocado, roasted chipotle peppers and pickled onion, the panko-crusted chicken Milanesa with spicy black beans, Oaxaca cheese, chipotle mayo and cilantro and the torta beef burger, piled high with mozzarella, piloncillo tomatoes, jalapenos and chipotle mayo. Rolled and deep fried taquitos are the other staple at Tortaria, with flavors such as carne asada with tomatillo salsa and mahi lime tacos with citrus jalapeno remoulade being crisp and fresh choices.

I ordered a pulled pork sandwich, fries and a queso starter. The pork sandwich was way under sauced, and the queso was completely broken-- a pool of oil on top of melted cheese. It tasted as it sounds. I would have sent it back but I imagine it was pulled from a source that was also broken. The best part of the meal were the french fries-- at a Mexican restaurant.

The waitress was nice, but she missed orders or mixed them with other tables, idk if she was new. Food and drinks were ok for the price.

Picked it because 4.5 star rating. Went for early dinner on Memorial Day. Place was empty. Chips were stale, ordered burrito with no onions…and got onions, they brought wrong flavor margarita… all while being serenaded with a techno soundtrack at an annoying level. Price was not bad not sure how they got a 4.5 rating. Food was mediocre.

The food was great, our waitresses were patient as my friend was late. The only issue was the absolutely wretched smell downstairs in and near the bathroom. I thought I was going to be sick so I guess at least it was good I was already in the bathroom. It's a very strong sewage smell, it's one of the worst smells I've ever smelled. So enjoy the food, it's good, and a decent price. Don't use the bathroom if you want to keep the food down.

We really enjoyed the restaurant. Drinks were varied and a large selection. My short ribs sandwich was one of the best Mexican dishes I’ve ever had. The rest of the group very much. Enjoyed their meals also. So, why one star? The bathroom was the most disgusting we have ever ever seen. We were there for the opening, so they clearly had time to clean up from the night week or month before. It appears nobody was paying any attention. While the food, and everything else was very very nice, we will never ever go back. Yes, it was that bad.

Our food arrived unusually fast and that was because it was the wrong order. Not a big deal, but they left the dishes on the table and we had to wait until I got up and informed the server. Finally got our food, not exactly what we wanted. A bit pricey for the portion, same with the drinks. The server was very pleasant.

Food served in very small cardboard containers so that it is impossible to eat without dropping it onto table. Plastic cutlery flimsy. My eggplant was burnt in an uninteresting and somewhat tasteless bun. Very expensive for what is essentially a take-away service. Two doors up, at the same price, the Mexican uses plates and has better seating but we discovered this after eating! Would not go back.
