Tonari is our Wafu Italian restaurant. WAFU means Japanese-style, so our menu is a Japanese take on Italian food. It originated in Japan through the love that the Japanese had for Italian food but wanted to incorporate some of their cultural flavors and ingredients to them. We at Daikaya Group and chef & owner, Katsuya Fukushima, are bringing this experience to you here in DC.

Looking for some fun Japanese antipasti bites, one of a kind pasta dishes, or pizza that you won't find anywhere else in the city? Then come join us for dinner, we look forward to having you soon.

                                    Pleasantly surprised by how incredible the food and service were here. Our server was absolutely amazing and accommodating, she wanted our experience to be memorable and really emphasized on us not feeling rushed (in DC. most of our dining experiences have been service staff rushing to flip tables and get you out of there). She wanted to course out everything to our liking so we could really enjoy and get the most out of it. The food was incredible. I thought it would be more in our face flavors that were a bit extreme, but this was done so beautifully. The flavors paired up so nicely together and complemented each other in each and every dish. I was so amazed at how they came together. We’ve recently dined at a few well known “fusion” restaurants in D.C. pairing seemingly opposite cuisines - they were way too in your face and overwhelming and really the integrity of the food was lost. This wasn’t the case. This was so subtle yet apparent. I’m kicking myself that I don’t remember the servers name, but I will make sure to call the restaurant today to give my compliments. I’m not usually much of a reviewer, but we spend our weeks filled up with dinner reservations to try every restaurant we can and as of late, our experiences have fallen short. Especially with the overly hyped, trendy places trying way too hard and falling short in D.C. This will be our new place to get some incredible comfort food - rain or shine.

                                    We went for restaurant week and we were NOT disappointed. It was our first time there, so the whole menu was unique to us. We were able to sit in the traditional Japanese area, which was a special treat! The food was absolutely delicious, fairly priced, and service was great. I can’t wait to go again t try their main menu.

                                    During restaurant week, the best one I went to l. It was 5 courses. I was full by the end. Really cool ambience. I would love to eat in the Japanese style section upstairs where you sit on the floor. Definitely recommend for date night or nice place to take yourself out. Beautiful gem in Chinatown! Will be going again just to try other parts of their menu

                                    We went during restaurant week so it wasn't a normal time. While the food was mostly rewarding in terms of balanced flavors , the wine pairings we received were lame.

                                    The food was great don’t get me wrong, but as we’re finishing up eating I see a mouse run out from the corner by our table and go down the hallways towards the kitchen. We were there for my friend’s birthday and the restaurant was very sweet and they gave us free ice cream, it was just the appearance of the mouse that ruined it and made me wary. So just a heads up if you decide to dine here.

                                    It is not Japanese style. It’s very Americanized Japanese Italian. My expectations were too high. I was disappointed as a Japanese. The taste was not bad. Service was good. Pizza was very good. The miso clam was so so.
