Tired of the loosely French inspired humdrum of restaurants popping up across the city of London? Do you like holidays? Do you like cold drinks and warm service? If you've answered yes to one or more of these then perhaps Tollington's can refresh both your pallet and your mind.

The idea came from a mirror in an antiques market and a love for a more informal approach to dining, the result is a chippy in North London with old church pews bolted to the walls to be leaned on and eaten from. The focus is on fish but the menu transcends fish, mammals and vegetables, leaving no stone unturned in the never ending quest for flavour.

Split between two rooms, the front the engine, the kitchen and bar shared by customers as they perch on bar stools and enjoy dinner and a show. The back, bookable room is lower, lower lighting, lower seating, perhaps a slight calm compared to the front room, here works of art from friends of the restaurant adorn the walls and floors.

Still ironing out the kinks, but I’m here to say you can’t charge £6 for 6 strawberries on ice. No go. The menu is the kind with minimal detail, which I typically enjoy, but when dishes were as simple as they could have been without any intrigue (eg a £9 plate of cheddar and almonds that is literally sliced cheddar and nice almonds), it’s disappointing. Sausage & green beans was excellent, as was the whole plaice. Loved the tomato salad. Sat outside which was a bit cramped for 3.

The food and drinks are good. The dining room at the rear is a bit cramped and loud, but you don't go to a place like this for peace and quiet. The place is not really suitable for parties larger than four, it is ideal for parties of two. Portions are small, but prices are largely fair for London, with some exceptions: the very small green salad with anchovy-flavoured dressing was particularly egregious at 10 pounds. Service is very friendly, although still going through some teething problems, which is to be expected on a very busy night shortly after opening. All in all, this is a good neighbourhood restaurant, and I will visit again once the opening hype has died down and the staff have had a chance to settle into the rhythm of the place.

Great addition to Stroud Green, the food is great and the ambience is like anything u would find in northern Spain. Drinks are well priced too. Will be back very soon if it’s not booked up!

Brilliant rapid, helpful service. The food was delicious and although busy it felt intimate and we could hear each other. Will be coming back lots and so glad for the later kitchen opening times.

One of the most exciting openings in London. Fun Fun Fun. Awesome food, great concept, fab staff and banging ambience. 10/10
