Tired of the loosely French inspired humdrum of restaurants popping up across the city of London? Do you like holidays? Do you like cold drinks and warm service? If you've answered yes to one or more of these then perhaps Tollington's can refresh both your pallet and your mind.

The idea came from a mirror in an antiques market and a love for a more informal approach to dining, the result is a chippy in North London with old church pews bolted to the walls to be leaned on and eaten from. The focus is on fish but the menu transcends fish, mammals and vegetables, leaving no stone unturned in the never ending quest for flavour.

Split between two rooms, the front the engine, the kitchen and bar shared by customers as they perch on bar stools and enjoy dinner and a show. The back, bookable room is lower, lower lighting, lower seating, perhaps a slight calm compared to the front room, here works of art from friends of the restaurant adorn the walls and floors.

Very hip hang out (I only went thanks to Giles Coren and my daughter). Lovely, imaginative tapas menu (not the norm at all) and the Chips Bravas are beyond delicious.

I arrived on time for my 6.15pm booking Oct 24 but unfortunately my 2 friends were 10 mins late. During the 10 mins I ordered a drink and asked twice by the waitress if my friends would be long as they needed the table back at 7.45. Then she suggested I order in advance of my friends arrival to ensure we ate before the table was due back. I did so despite there being a whole hour and 15 mins left, assuming the food would take a while. It started to come out 5 mins later and before our friend joined us! She arrived to cold food she had not ordered. The quality was also not as expected given the reviews and numerous past experiences at the Plimsoll near our home. The morcilla in particular was sparse, cold and hard. We had finished our meal way before the time was up. The experience felt rushed and unwelcoming. Not impressed!

Food was so good and the look and feel of the space felt like a Spanish canteen. Will defo come again if they’ll have me.

loads of potential and they were v accommodating of us being late but the food was patchy quality wise some great but fish was v undercooked and there was a bit of chaos when it came to the check and we ended up accidentally paying loads then being refunded then paying again. we got dessert on the house which is was super lush of them. keen to go again when they’re having a better day!

Food was good and atmosphere was lively which is what I had expected from reviews I had read. We had booked a table for four for 9.30 - the only sitting available given how popular this place is right now. We ordered a few plates and a bottle wine - all good so far. We ordered another bottle and when this was brought we said we wanted to order a couple more small plates and were told we couldn’t because the kitchen had closed at 10pm - it was 10.05 when we asked. They’d been happy to sell us another bottle of £45 wine but no food - we wouldn’t have ordered the wine if we’d known this was the case. For a 9.30pm sitting they should have told us that we had 30 minutes before kitchen closed and we would have made sure we’d ordered in good time or more dishes to begin with. As this is a small plate tapas style set up surely the idea is to order more food as you go? Because of poor service, not telling us what time the kitchen closed and waiting a while for our last dish which I think they had forgotten, we weren’t able to do this and left feeling hungry. Won’t be returning.

A wonderful experience, eating the beautifully assembled fish in a very casual and fun environment. Service is impeccable and only downside of the food was they’d sold out a few of the dishes I wanted to try. I’ll be coming back next week!
