Tired of the loosely French inspired humdrum of restaurants popping up across the city of London? Do you like holidays? Do you like cold drinks and warm service? If you've answered yes to one or more of these then perhaps Tollington's can refresh both your pallet and your mind.

The idea came from a mirror in an antiques market and a love for a more informal approach to dining, the result is a chippy in North London with old church pews bolted to the walls to be leaned on and eaten from. The focus is on fish but the menu transcends fish, mammals and vegetables, leaving no stone unturned in the never ending quest for flavour.

Split between two rooms, the front the engine, the kitchen and bar shared by customers as they perch on bar stools and enjoy dinner and a show. The back, bookable room is lower, lower lighting, lower seating, perhaps a slight calm compared to the front room, here works of art from friends of the restaurant adorn the walls and floors.

Ingredients super fresh, affordable food and drinks (for LDN small plates) and enjoyable vibe and lovely waitress. Rice pudding was 10/10.

Absolutely worth the hype - faultless food, service and vibe. Recommend finding a group of 3 as booking takes all the risk out of it!

Staff were great and the food delicious. However, portions were minute and therefore very expensive. £6 for a dozen cherries? The environment is grim - an old fish and chip shop but without any attractive features. Cracked floor tiles and pebble-dashed walls. We were in the ‘restaurant’ - the tiny back room - sitting on stools around a pub table - 3 of us. It felt oppressive. The staff were the redeeming feature. Young, efficient and friendly.

Food was delicious, very authentic and well-cooked. We found the decision to bring out almost all the dishes before we had space on the table disruptive as we weren't able to keep up and a lot of the food wasn't at its best by the time we could finish it. This is fine with some of the dishes but delicately grilled squid would have been much better enjoyed before it was cold and a bit gelatinous. When asked if we could slow down the pace, we were told that's just the way it is done. I understand it is difficult to keep fish warm as it will impact the finished product however this felt like an oversight as our table was already at its limit. We have visited Spain and the type of bar this is inspired by many times, and the kitchen and staff tend to stagger dishes, even pairing ones they feel would work better together. At this price, this level of consideration was expected. Drinks service was slow to begin with - we had our bravas before any drinks or tap water. We brought our own wine, which was great to have the possibility of corkage but the wine was poured without checking and kept at the bar for a while which was jarring. Overall, the experience felt considered on a conceptual level and the decor and approach completely make sense, but the execution was really lacking. Small tables and inconsiderate service let down what really was some fantastic cooking.

We wanted to visit this place for a while and was worth every single penny. Unfortunately, our booking was a mistake from their system and it clashed with the kitchen opening hours. This was not communicated to us, and when we wanted to order more, we were told the kitchen was closed. If they had communicated to us in advance, we would have ordered more from the beginning. We left with half empty stomaches and wanting to try more things next time we visit. Such a shame!!! But we will come back.
