The Woodmans Arms is a beautiful ‘country feel’ pub and dining room situated within the village of Whickham, at the top of the hill, hidden amongst rows of spectacular trees. We are more than just a venue, we are a destination worth travelling to serving classic comforting food made with love, served in cosy surroundings overlooking the most amazing views of the North East.

We are the proud winner of the Newcastle Chronicle’s Eddy Eats’ pub of the year for character, quality, service and value. UK top 3 in the Seafish National Fish and Chip awards 2019 and Diners’ choice award for best ambience. Best British Pub Pie winner for 2020.

We support our local farmers, and work closely with a number of local suppliers to ensure the very best fresh produce. All our food is cooked freshly to order so whether it be a bar snack, light bite, leisurely lunch, evening meal or Sunday Roast it is safe to say that you will in safe hands.

The Sunday dinner was quite poor. We’ve had an amazing one in the past but not yhid one. Meet described as punk beef wasn’t and was fatty and chewy. Potatoes were dry, hard and not crispy and fluffy. Green veg was dry and undercooked. One carrot and one parsnip on the plate. Some watery gravy but then given a lumpy jug. Really disappointed. Two starters, 2 Sundays dinners and 2 drinks were £75, not worth it all. We won’t be back, it’s a shame as it’s a lovely venue but food gone downhill.

Amazing food, quite a few young families in which was quite distracting but I understand this is a family venue. Despite this good food and pleasant to see a varied 0 alcohol offering well done!!

The food is lovely and hot when served. Me and my partner first came here towards the end of 2023. We had our own server and could not fault the service, since this visit we have been here a total of 3 times. Each time the service has gotten worse, it appeared that the tables weren’t assigned a server, consequently this meant that the server was slow and we were being asked the same question multiple times by multiple different staff - such as being ready to order food, deserts etc. When our food and drinks came over they were put on the table for us to pass around ourselves, were prior we were handed them. It is very disappointing that such a lovely place with great food is being let down by poor service, overall I wouldn’t say it ruined our time but it has put us off coming back. 50% of the staff did not have a real service manner about them, one of which literally slammed the drinks down onto the table. Another small issue was waiting for our food, we had to wait a long time for starters and again a long time for our mains, given that the pub was busy I would probably not have commented on this however it was very quiet.

We enjoyed a very nice dinner at The Woodmans Arms. Menu was varied and service was great. Pricing is a little on the high side but overall I thought the value was pretty good. Would definitely return.

Absolutely wonderful sunday lunches. I had chicken and the others in the party had gammon and beef. All very tasty and good quality, would definitely return. They do small portions too but this isnt obvious and is on the children’s menu which you dont get. Therefore when we return we would order a children’s meal for the pensioner in the party who does not eat as much. It is expensive compared to other places but it was worth it as the quality is good.

Very friendly and efficient staff. Delicious food. Perhaps not the first thing you think about when visiting a gastro pub but the entrance was not clearly marked. We saw several vehicles making dangerous manoeuvres on a busy country road because they had passed the entrance. Could easily be remedied with a sandwich board with an arrow on the opposite side of the road.
