The White Horse is a delightful old pub in Hatching Green. Five minutes from the bustling centre of Harpenden on the one hand and Junction 9 of the M1 on the other, the pub has a lovely country setting, surrounded by a large leafy garden and terrace.

The bar is warm and cosy, with old parquet and low beams hung with antique copper jugs, while the dining room is light & fresh, its French windows opening onto a sunny terrace. In our charming private dining room, up a winding stair in the oldest part of the pub, we can comfortably host a dinner party for twelve.

Great service. Lovely sitting outside with our dog. Portions a little small but otherwise food decent.

We have been to restaurant many times and this was our worst experience. It was Friday evening but to wait over an hour for our first course is unacceptable. The restaurant must either hire more staff or reduce the number of bookings. The next table sent three of their meals back to the kitchen. Finally, my wife and I suffered upset stomachs a few hours later. Management must take action!

Very poor breakfast experience. Some of the food cold or not cooked at all. Items missed off order too. Servers were polite but generally inattentive. Will not be returning.

Only downside was starter special Cherizzo Bon Bon which was a bit bland, steaks were great, Shiraz was lovely and the service was unhurried and attentive. Would definitely recommend and will be back.

We are long time diners at the White Horse over its many changes of hands. It is currently the best it has ever been with great food and service. Recommended.

Catch of the day, sea bass, with boiled new potatoes and rocket salad, on the specials menu. Lunch outside, pleasant setting, good service. But, the food was disappointing. The sea bass was one small filet, cooked nicely, occupying abour one third of the plate; at least three medium sized potatoes, halved, taking up most of the rest of the plate, they were floury, tasteless, and definitely not new. And a pile of rocket, taking up the rest of the plate, with possibly some oil on it. The was a slice of lemon, and the potatoes had a little oil or butter.
