The White Horse & Griffin has developed a reputation for great food served in a relaxed and unfussy style, using locally sourced ingredients. With an emphasis on fresh seafood, we pride ourselves on great service and value for money. Built in 1681 and with a history you can almost taste, you can dine in the very room where Captain Cook and William Scoresby used to raise and fix their crews!
The upstairs restaurant offers private dining and is ideal for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries or just getting groups of friends together.
Downstairs, our busy ‘bistro style’ restaurant serves many British classics in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
To accompany your meal we have a well-stocked wine cellar, many of which are available by the glass.

Access by car is for unloading only. It is easier to reverse back out onto the tarmac than it is to proceed along the cobbles and turn around. The closest car park is 150 yards away just along the tarmac part of Church Street with CCTV cameras. Parking is free after 6pm until 9am the following day.

We have eaten here in a number of occasions / and has always been really good - but today ..,,,, Probably the worst Sunday lunch i have ever had It was not possible to cut the beef. Tried to be flexible - asked for steak knife / but still not possible The bits eaten were really poor - Did bring it to the attention of the establishment buf were simply told - we were unlucky - which is disappointing to say the least

Food was cold had to send it back. When we did receive the replacement it wasn’t edible. Apparently kitchen is located along distance away from dining area. Surly serve food on hot plates and cover the food with hot metal covers? Besides this the staff were lovely and apologised.

It took longer than expected for our order to be taken and served but the rest was very busy so this was understandable. The quality of our food was excellent: tasty and freshly prepared.

It was a dinner for two. A shared starter if dressed crab was very good. One main wS also very good but the other was oddly half hot and half cold, a fish pie. The price of this dish was removed from the bill. Great dining room and very professional staff.

Loud and obnoxious duo in the only other quartet in the separate comfy room that caters for dogs threatened to derail a lovely experience, but luckily they began to dissipate as starters arrived. Service was very attentive to start with and young lady server was engaging and delightful. Young man needed polish, but older man was also very pleasant. Regrettably service tailed off towards the end of the evening though we might have been the last customers in the whole pub! Food was very good and Mackerel starter was exceptional value. My fellow diners were especially impressed with the lamb, chicken and super salad mains, and the fish pie I had was no slouch, just less elevated. Would absolutely recommend for fellow dog lovers. Thank you.

Fantastic food every time. Sadly this time kept having to ask for the dessert menu and still never got it. But all in all it’s a great place to eat.
