The White Horse & Griffin has developed a reputation for great food served in a relaxed and unfussy style, using locally sourced ingredients. With an emphasis on fresh seafood, we pride ourselves on great service and value for money. Built in 1681 and with a history you can almost taste, you can dine in the very room where Captain Cook and William Scoresby used to raise and fix their crews!
The upstairs restaurant offers private dining and is ideal for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries or just getting groups of friends together.
Downstairs, our busy ‘bistro style’ restaurant serves many British classics in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
To accompany your meal we have a well-stocked wine cellar, many of which are available by the glass.

Access by car is for unloading only. It is easier to reverse back out onto the tarmac than it is to proceed along the cobbles and turn around. The closest car park is 150 yards away just along the tarmac part of Church Street with CCTV cameras. Parking is free after 6pm until 9am the following day.

Superb Sunday lunch. The pork wrapped in bacon was beautifully cooked as where the vegetables are the Yorkshire pudding. The staff particularly Amy couldn’t do enough

Sunday lunch was delicious, beef so tender and the trimmings were great except the roast parsnip, which was undercooked. The service here is really excellent and the room which allows dogs is attractive and spacious. Highly recommend.

Not all the specials were available. Glasses not cleared from table. Onion rings greasy and the table next to us were equally as disappointed with their meal. Friday night middle of June I would have expected more having been recommended this restaurant by a friend

We come here every time we are in Whitby .The staff are lovely and friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The food is well presented & most importantly tastes fantastic. Can’t recommend this place enough

This was the 1st time we've eaten here since before the 1st lockdown, and I was really looking forward to it, as previously the food has been amazing. I'll be fair, and state that the starters we had (chorizo mac'n'cheese and King Scallops) were lovely. My partner had mussels for his main, and enjoyed them, though felt it was a portion big enough for 2 people to share, so a lot went to waste. The kids were happy enough with their food. I ordered the lamb dish that promised flavours of the Middle East, but instead was bland and underseasoned. The lamb tasted of fat and not much else, the lemon yogurt didn't have any lemon flavour, harrissa was listed in the description, I didn't taste it anywhere, the couscous tasted of a basic stock with occasional mint thrown in, the only thing that had flavour on the plate was the pomegranate, and that's because it naturally tastes that way. I was expecting punchy, beautiful flavours of the Middle East, and instead got bland and boring. It's the most expensive thing on the menu, it should be without fault, instead it was nothing but faults. Overall, I was pretty disappointed as previously, before lockdown, everything on the menu was amazing.

Recommended by my sister, but felt disappointed. Wonky table, which isn't a problem in an old building, every table had a wedge to steady it, but our wedge was too small and it kept coming out. Waiter forgot to deliver our bottle of wine and then just left it on thd table without a cooler. Food just ok

Lovely historic surroundings. Good service although just 2 servers so needed to be patient but they were efficient on an unexpectedly busy night. The food was high end quality and extremely tasty.
