The White Horse & Griffin has developed a reputation for great food served in a relaxed and unfussy style, using locally sourced ingredients. With an emphasis on fresh seafood, we pride ourselves on great service and value for money. Built in 1681 and with a history you can almost taste, you can dine in the very room where Captain Cook and William Scoresby used to raise and fix their crews!
The upstairs restaurant offers private dining and is ideal for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries or just getting groups of friends together.
Downstairs, our busy ‘bistro style’ restaurant serves many British classics in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
To accompany your meal we have a well-stocked wine cellar, many of which are available by the glass.

Access by car is for unloading only. It is easier to reverse back out onto the tarmac than it is to proceed along the cobbles and turn around. The closest car park is 150 yards away just along the tarmac part of Church Street with CCTV cameras. Parking is free after 6pm until 9am the following day.

A lovely setting in the oldest pub in whitby, food was good and ambience nice. Enjoyed the trio of white wines a good idea to help you choose a bottle and especially enjoyed the flight of port with the cheese. A great night

We started with the excellent oysters and a glass of bubbly. The roast beef for Sunday lunch was some of the best I have eaten and we’ve really enjoyed the vegetables particularly the cauliflower cheese. Service was efficient and friendly in a lovely cosy restaurant.

Sunday roast of Yorkshire Silverside of beef. Excellent! One of the best Sunday lunches we’ve had in a while. The restaurant is very cosy, with a lovely old range, stone flagged floors, oak beams and candles on the table. The staff were friendly and attentive. I would definitely recommend this place and would definitely return.

We love WH&G. Always on our list of restaurants to visit when in Whitby. Food is excellent, staff are great and venue lovely.

We have visited White Horse & Griffin a few times & have always enjoyed the food. Unfortunately on Sunday we were very disappointed. The beef was so tough I couldn’t even cut through it, no mash potatoes not even as a side order. The girl who served us was very fair & brought some fresh beef. Unfortunately it was still very tough so disappointing as we were looking forward to our Sunday lunch. Hopefully next time the meat will be good, they did sort an adjustment to the final bill which was appreciated.
