The Highlander Hotel and Supper Club are back! Join us to experience our modern take on the 1967 Highlander's 1967 Supper Club. Features two dining rooms with two completely different experiences: One, an adult-oriented classic supper club with a more upscale feel and swanky lobby bar; Two, a lively family-oriented casual dining room centered around the historic sunken bar and an arcade with retro and modern games. The Highlander Supper Club was built in 1967. The hotel, ballroom, and pool followed in 1974. For the next 30 years, both experienced extraordinary success playing host to celebrities like Micky Mantle, Joan Baez, and Arnold Palmer, arguably becoming one of the most popular entertainment, event, dining, and hotel destinations in Iowa history! The Highlander Hotel has been reimagined, reinvented and renovated as a chic boutique urban resort, the only independent hotel in Iowa City.

When the Highlander opened in 1967, the most popular drink served was the Mai Tai, a Tiki craze-inspired blend of aged rum, curacao, orgeat, and lime juice. The Tiki culture was inspired by the sentimental appeal of an idealized South Pacific as viewed through the experiences of tourists and Hollywood movies, incorporating beautiful scenery, forbidden love, and the potential for danger.

Terrible brunch buffet. Meat was cold. Food basic. Frozen pie boxes next to the dessert table. Room was dark.

The stuffed mushrooms were good. The calamari was a standard frozen version with think coating, not great. The service at first was horrible. It took 1/2 hour to get a poorly made drink (there were 5 other people in the place). We got a new server and she did a wonderful job remaking the drink and serving us. That was the highlight. I had prime rib, it came dried out from being under heat lamps or stored in an oven with knife sent to use with it was tucked under the prime rib and so hot I couldn't touch it. The place smelled musty, the decor looked like left over wedding decorations. They had taken the old chairs and covered them with material held in place with a large bow - not elegant at all. I won't go back. It was a horrible disappointment as I loved this supper club when I was a high school student. They won't survive long if things don't get better. In addition to our party of 3, there were 8 people who were served there between 5:30 and 9:30 on a Friday night.

Loved my time at The Supper Club, food came out hot and delicious. Our server was helpful and accommodating. We enjoyed the prime rib and ribeye that were both perfect. Before we left we played a few games and had a few local craft beers. Great night all around!

I love that they have given new life to this old school Supper Club and have kept the theme and story alive. It was a fun atmosphere, we had great service and really enjoyed our dinner. The cocktails, salads and entrees were especially great. I would definitely recommend a stay at the hotel as well. I plan to be back and hopefully for the live music dining on a Friday night.

We went to Sunday brunch here. The food wasn’t spectacular for the price we were paying—pretty standard brunch fare. The ambience was just odd in this huge hotel ballroom that was very poorly lit. Our table was in a dark corner and it’s no wonder our server seemed to forget about us. No water refills and we couldn’t find her (or anyone for that matter) to pay our bill. We won’t be back and I unfortunately can’t recommend it to others either.

Not the experience we expected. Very dark and uninviting room. We did not like most of food. Biscuits & gravy had green chiles or something weird. Eggs & fresh fruit were great. Waffle “station” seemed to be warmed up frozen waffles. Grilled veggies soggy. Sliced beef was like leather. The desserts were still frozen. Wait staff never came back with drinks. Had to get up and ask someone for our check.

WOW!!! I cannot say enough great things about the Supper Club at the Highlander Hotel. The Supper Club offers an incredible night out! We started with drinks and appetizers in the swanky lobby bar, enjoyed a luxurious dinner in the bougie dining room, and ended with dessert at the cozy sunken bar, followed by skeeball in the arcade. The Prime Rib, Iowa Chop, and Swordfish were all top-notch. We decided to stay overnight, enjoying a refreshing swim in the Highlander’s giant pool. The next morning's brunch was delightful, with every bite delicious. Don’t miss this gem in Iowa City!

We were excited to go to the Highlander as we use to love to go there. Last night the food was awful other than the bread and butter. we had a party of 4 and and 3 had steaks and 1 being the prime rib was just terrible. It was a dark grey in color and very hard to chew. The vegetables were not cooked enough. W will not eat there ever again. Your dining room is a Joke!!!! We were seated at a card table and the chairs were quite unsteady. Your hostess is very dry and did not speak to us when we came in or left. The music was loud until our waiter shut the door. Our waiter did a great job and was very attentive. Good luck in the future!!!! you are going to need it

I'm really sorry you weren't happy. It's so weird how tables, same night, same menu can be over the moon and one can be incredibly unhappy. We're moving the music and dancing to the Highlander's ballroom so that noise won't be an issue moving forward! We have new chairs in that dining room now - solid wood! We look forward to surprising and delighting you in the future should you allow us another shot. Thank you!!
