Casual, coastal restaurant in Bloomington. Reservations are taken for the dining room only, patio seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please check in with hosts upon arrival for patio seating.

Although named for the boats used to catch lobster, Smack Shack was launched as a food truck in 2010 serving lobster rolls from a land-locked downtown Minneapolis parking lot. Owner Josh Thoma had a great recipe and a belief that the appetite for fresh lobster in the Twin Cities was as strong as in any coastal city.

Smack Shack is committed to serving sustainable seafood and is a partner in the Minnesota Zoo’s Fish Smart program. Sustainable seafood is wild-caught or farm-raised seafood that has established practices to ensure the long-term growth and thriving populations of seafood with limited harm to the environment.

Food was expensive. 1 1/2-lb. lobster was $60, most other entrees +/- $30. Steamed lobster was overcooked and tough. Paella entree should have been saffron-seasoned but some spicier seasoning overpowered the flavor, and the mussels were inedible. A third diner in our party of six reported that his black cod entree was skimpy and left him hungry. Our server was pleasant. Our diners enjoyed their mixed drinks.

Snow crab legs were cooked perfect. We ate at 5:00pm on a Saturday and it was slightly busy. About 6pm as we were leaving it was full.

Fantastic! Everything was incredible. The lobster bisque was rich and creamy, tons of lobster chunks, the peel and eat shrimp incredibly fresh, the shack burger was just insane! If I lived here, I’d eat here at least 2-3x a week!

We went there for Brunch. The Menu was awesome. French Quarter style brunch. Shrimp and Grits, Beignets. It was all great and the server was punctual and very friendly. We will be coming back.

A terrific experience, highly recommended. Oysters as good as if we were eating them on the Massachusetts beach. Very friendly attentive service, they were always there when needed. Poke wraps were delicious and crisp with a pleasantly spicy sauce. Great lobster roll with a heap of tender lobster and a mountain of fries. Linguine with clams was uniquely flavored with ample fresh clams, they were perfectly clean with not a bit of grit. The place was packed but noise was not an issue, it was easy to hear our conversation. We will be returning to enjoy it again, and is now one of our favorite metro restaurants.

Our server was the best! Busing staff cleared as we ate and it was nice not to have a table full of dishes. On point and courteous!!! Food was amazing! We enjoyed our experience and will definitely return!

Not super impressed with our experience. My husbands crab legs came with one not even having any meat in it. We asked to have our leftovers boxed and arrived home to find part of our food missing. And it was freezing in the restaurant with cold air blowing directly down on our table. Disappointing for what was to be a fun family Birthday celebration.
