Casual, coastal restaurant in Bloomington. Reservations are taken for the dining room only, patio seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please check in with hosts upon arrival for patio seating.

Although named for the boats used to catch lobster, Smack Shack was launched as a food truck in 2010 serving lobster rolls from a land-locked downtown Minneapolis parking lot. Owner Josh Thoma had a great recipe and a belief that the appetite for fresh lobster in the Twin Cities was as strong as in any coastal city.

Smack Shack is committed to serving sustainable seafood and is a partner in the Minnesota Zoo’s Fish Smart program. Sustainable seafood is wild-caught or farm-raised seafood that has established practices to ensure the long-term growth and thriving populations of seafood with limited harm to the environment.

First time in..it was pretty good for Minnesota seafood restaurant. They said they were out of some seafood for my dish and substituted other food...added shrimp vs sea scallops. The flavor was very good. The presentation was ok...very clean looking. Our server seemed to be all over the place from barback to server.I..had to get his attention for things we needed. I will be back and assume this was a one-off experience. I really want to love this place...and bring two wallets.

The food here is excellent! Our table enjoyed the lobster guacamole, the risotto special, the Connecticut version of the lobster roll, the tacos, and the salmon dish. They have a great non-alcoholic beer, wine, and mocktails selection. The atmosphere was good. Service was very slow, especially at the end of the meal when we had to wait a long time to see our server again to clear plates and drop the check. They did well to accommodate splitting of the check amongst the 4 of us, which was nice.

I started with a cup of the clam chowder. It was simply potato soup with some pieces of pork and one piece of clam in it. I've had better from a can. I ordered the entree 'Day boat Scallops – Brussels, Chorizo, Romesco'. I did not expect this dish to be blackened (no indication on the menu) but that is what I received. The brussel sprouts were so charred that the rather flavorless romesco sauce that they were placed on had no chance of disguising their bitterness. And who can eat nearly 2 dozen sprout halves anyway? The rubbery, under seared scallops were placed on the perimeter of the plate so they cooled quite quickly; I did not detect any chorizo on the plate. My wife ordered the 'Lobster Boil' which was average at best. The whole tin plate was liberally doused with Old Bay seasoning I guess to give it that east coast effect. Hint: maybe provide this on the side and let the customer season the meal to their taste. The 'had a few' regulars at the bar singing to the juke box made for an interesting ambience. At least my iced tea was o.k.

We had a great meal! The wait staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. The kitchen was slow so dinner took a while. Not problematic but good to know if you’re on a tight timeframe.
