Locally sourced, seasonal food menus showcasing the best of the local area. Craft beers are all local, exclusive or unusual in some way - no run of the mill here!

We had a very enjoyable lunch here, the location is beautiful, service was excellent and the food was very tasty. We will definitely be returning.

Great people working in the pub. Very friendly and helpful. An excellent range of local beers. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. The pub is in a great location with access to the South Downs and the South Downs Way. It makes an excellent base for walkers with well earned food and drink to finish !

We love this pub hence why we chose it for Father's Day. The food was lovely as always but service was a bit slow due to being so busy and the potatoes were a bit overdone. We still had a great day and enjoyed sitting in the sunshine. The Shepherd and Dog is in our top 3 pubs in Sussex!

Honestly the service was so bad it was hilarious; we weren't sure if it was performance art. 1.15pm: We ordered five roasts, after 45 minutes went to check where they were, they said they were on their way. 2.15pm: Two roasts turn up. 2.30pm: We had finished those two roasts when someone came to ask if we had everything we needed. Enquired about the missing 3 roasts. 2.45pm: The missing roasts turn up. We're back on track. Hey, it's a busy day, they couldn't have forseen a sunny Sunday on Farther's day might be busy so they were probably right to have a skeleton staff of 3. 3.15pm: No sign of any service staff and plates gathering flies. We went to enquire about our desserts. Was told that we were supposed to come and tell them we were ready for them?! We said we were. 3.30pm: Asked a passing waiter for an update. He said he'd check. 3.45pm: Went and asked again, after some discussion we were told they were still being prepared. 3.50pm: One dessert arrives. The waiter looked so triumphant it was adorable. Dirty plates from our mains still stacked up on our table. He didn't take them. 4pm: We went and asked again about the missing desserts and were told that the kitchen said we had already had them. We let them know we hadn't. 4.15pm: The remaining desserts turned up. This time some of them had ice cream which wasn't with the first one. (I can't explain it but by this point I think we were all delirious and found this absolutely hilarious. Apart from the guy who didn't get ice cream. Tough scene.) 4.25pm: We asked to speak to the manager, none of us were habitual complainers so didn't really know what we wanted and we had paid in advance, but it felt like someone needed to know how shocking the service had been and maybe we could have a free drink or at least an earnest apology? The guy said he'd go and try and find them. Did the manager turn up? Reader, I think you already know the answer. 4.45: We left. Roasts were great, desserts were sh*t.

From the moment we arrived we were treated with courtesy and care. Great service both at bar and table. The food was amazing and beautifully presented. We enjoyed the local beer and will definitely return. Thank you for a most enjoyable experience.

Superb! Service and attention was excellent, and the menu and food choices perfect for an informal business meeting with 7 guests. Staff were courteous and helpful on all aspects and cannot fault anything. Will return! Thank you.
