The Royal is operated by James Hickson, who has a solid hospitality background having learned his trade at well-loved restaurants and gastropubs including St John, Great Queen Street, The Canton Arms and Moro. James is hands-on at the pub, overseeing the relaxed yet lively atmosphere, friendly service and sophisticated food and drink. The kitchen is led by head chef, Andrew Taylor-Gray, who has previously worked at Petersham Nurseries, Hix and The Canton Arms.

The Royal has been included in the Michelin Guide since February 2020 with Bib Gourmand status, which we have maintained ever since.

A welcoming gastropub for locals and visitors alike in St. Leonards-On-Sea and Hastings, low-key and down-to-earth, The Royal occupies an historic corner site right opposite St. Leonards Warrior Square station.

What an amazing night. Food was excellent. Compliments to the chef as they say. The waiter (sorry I didn't catch you name. Guy with mustache) was highly knowledgable about the menu and we enjoyed the rapor and service given. The Royal has such a lovely atmosphere and it's nice the menu changes so we get to try new dishes. The food really is outstanding. The Pork was cooked to perfection. Credit to everyone involved. Really great place and we look forward to going again soon.

Had a really amazing experience at the Royal that had been recommended to us by friends. We had the week day fixed price evening menu which I thought represented great value for the quality of the dishes served and the variation of the menu. It was £22 for two courses and £26 for three. The taste was exceptional, the presentation excellent and the quantity was perfect. We had a side of buttered greens which was not required but added very nicely to the meal. I also really liked the layout of the seating and the decor in general of the venue. It just oozes tradition with the wood panelling and then the menu adds the contemporary aspect which balances perfectly. I would highly recommend and look forward to more visits.

Lovely pub opposite St Leonards Warrior Square station. Friendly staff, spacious pub with separate dining/bar eating areas. Tasty gastro type menu. Quite expensive but worth it. A step up from normal pub grub. Dog friendly.

Pleasant surroundings. Good food. Bread as part of the meal would be good ( rather than a £3.50 charge). We all enjoyed the food-duck, pasta, red mullet and the puddings were good ( particularly the rhubarb and custard)

It is as the other reviews. A very friendly place good service. We had the pork rillette, trout and then skate wing for mains and all was fab! So full no puds!
