The Royal is operated by James Hickson, who has a solid hospitality background having learned his trade at well-loved restaurants and gastropubs including St John, Great Queen Street, The Canton Arms and Moro. James is hands-on at the pub, overseeing the relaxed yet lively atmosphere, friendly service and sophisticated food and drink. The kitchen is led by head chef, Andrew Taylor-Gray, who has previously worked at Petersham Nurseries, Hix and The Canton Arms.

The Royal has been included in the Michelin Guide since February 2020 with Bib Gourmand status, which we have maintained ever since.

A welcoming gastropub for locals and visitors alike in St. Leonards-On-Sea and Hastings, low-key and down-to-earth, The Royal occupies an historic corner site right opposite St. Leonards Warrior Square station.

The menu is simple, and I wasn’t sure that it would live up to its Bib Gourmand award, but I needn’t have worried, the food was lovely and the service was excellent. IT’S A PUB, opposite a train station. Yet, somehow they have managed to keep a local pub vibe, with well kept beer, typical bar snacks (Tayto chips!) etc alongside an exceptional kitchen. If you popped in for a pint for an after work beer, you’d have no idea you were drinking in one of best kitchens in East Sussex, according to Michelin. Conversely, if you are eating, the pub atmosphere never over runs too much, into the dining area. SERVICE IS RELAXED BUT PROFESSIONAL. We were met at the bar by a friendly barman, our young waiter was spot on; offering advice and leaving us alone, when needed and the bar/restaurant manager stayed in the background, marshalling her troops and quietly making sure everything ran smoothly. PUB PORTIONS AT A HIGHER LEVEL OF COOKING. Hearty portions of well cooked food at very competitive prices. The lamb ribs I had would have made a filling supper at home, if I could cook this well. WILL I RETURN? Hell yeah! In fact I’ve already booked to return at the end of the month to see what it’s like at lunchtime, and I live nearly an hour away!!

Absolutely fantastic all round. Loved everything about it. The food, drink, staff, environment was all amazing. One of the best dining experiences anywhere this year. Quality and price is outstanding. Can't wait to go back. 10 out of 10

The food and service were wonderful. Exceptionally tasty, unusual and interesting menu and really helpful and knowledgeable staff. The beer choice was also excellent. It wasn't overly busy, which is by no means a bad thing, but maybe the atmosphere was affected by this a tiny bit. I had expected the '2 courses for....' to be available but, probably being a bank holiday, it was not. Not the cheapest place in the world but the all round quality was deserving of being a little more expensive.

Lovely relaxing place to eat. Good food, good atmosphere and accommodating staff. Main courses beautifully cooked and not bad price but felt £10 was expensive for a brandy and would have preferred my affogato to have had hot espresso coffee on the icecream rather than cold

A Thursday night visit to the Royal for a date night without the kids. There is a fixed price menu with 5 choices for each course that delivers outstanding value at £26 for 3 courses. The service was attentive and friendly and the food very good.

It was a hot sunny Sunday when we visited and I think this was to our advantage as we had a lovely calm, quiet late lunch from start to finish. Great service-good balance of keeping an eye on us and letting us be. The food was wonderful, we had several of the mains and everyone was very happy with his/her meal. If you have the pork belly (I did) go hungry! We will definitely be making a return visit.
