   This restaurant is outstanding in every way The service is first class and the food sublime If you want to push the boat out, this is the place to visit

   Booked to dine at The Rise many weeks ago, as requested I informed that I had a garlic allergy When we arrived we were asked if we had any allergies, I informed that I had a garlic allergy, ‘perfect’ (weird response but we’ll go with it) I reviewed the menu, chose a few options and the waitress went to see if I could have them No I could only have steak or one of the fish dishes Chose a fish dish, no can’t have that, so chose the one remaining fish dish The dish was nice enough, but not what I would have chosen I hoped for more from this 5 * hotel, that hosts its own cookery school Disappointing

   This is the third time this year, having afternoon tea at The Grand Hotel, that is a recommendation in itself. Excellent quality fine dining style afternoon tea, generous amount, well balanced, unlimited tea or coffee of any style. Lovely surroundings, relaxed and unhurried, we spent over two hours there, well informed and attentive staff, menu changes according to and relevant to the season.

   Overall a nice afternoon tea experience. Food was well presented and tasty and the tea was constantly refreshed. On arrival we told the restaurant reception we had a gift voucher and she asked us to email it to them as soon as we were seated but offered no WiFi for this. She then showed us to a table at the end of a long row despite a nice window seat being available. When I asked if we could sit there I felt the response was hesitant/reluctant. Is this because we had a voucher which my sister had bought the August before? Once seated our waitress came over and when she realised we were emailing the voucher across asked if she could also have the code as she needed it. We explained we were emailing it but she said she needed it too. I have never known such a fuss when reimbursing a voucher and certainly not what I expect from a 5* hotel. After this the service was good and the food was nice although we did feel some of the staff in the restaurant weren’t presented as smartly as they should have been. Overall a nice afternoon tea but not any better than other afternoon teas in York. Not a 5* experience in our opinion.

   I was given a voucher for dinner at the Rise as a retirement gift. My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful evening. High class surroundings, but relaxed and comfortable. The service was excellent, attentive and friendly. I can totally recommend the chicken liver pâté, and our beef wellington was just scrummy. Thank you to all the staff.

    The food was delicious,fortunately we were able to take a doggy bag with us as there was more than we could manage. I particularly enjoyed the lapsang souchong. It was beautifully presented and each item a lovely bite of flavour.
