Afternoon Tea in the Tearoom at Old Hall Hotel. Beautifully presented finger sandwiches, scones and cakes, polished off with a pot of tea and of course a glass of bubbly for our special occasion. It was delicious, our waitress was lovely. A very good experience. Come hungry though, we had to take some of the cakes away to eat later!

The service was very slow. We had to wait quite a while before our order was taken. We had a theatre show to go to and the restaurant was not that busy. We did have to ask were our main course was and we felt that we had to rush our meal so that we could leave in time for the show. The starter course was very small. Even though it was an early booking they had run out of the beef course I asked for so overall it was not a good experience for us.

On booking, I was expecting a hotel like this to have an a la carte menu for dinner, as it did indeed have when we dined there last year. There was no indication that there would only be a fixed menu until we were told on arrival. But then it transpired that one of the three main courses was unavailable, leaving only fish and risotto. I had the fish, which was passable although the accompanying noodles were overcooked and mushy. My friend had the risotto which turned out to be inedible (the manager tasted it and agreed) . My friend doesn't eat fish so was left without a main course. Given that there were only three tables occupied, the chef? could easily have offered an alternative but didn't. To cap it all, we were kept waiting for over half an hour when we asked to pay. In the end, they got a lady (I think from the hotel next door) to sort things out, which she did and offered us a reduction on our bill, which we accepted. I might add that we had a trainee waiter that evening, under the supervision of his manager. He was very pleasant and helpful and I should emphasise that none of this was his fault. His manager seemed to have abandoned him later in the evening. We won't be rushing back...

We arrived too early for the pre-theatre menu as the matinee opera finished earlier than expected. So we ordered from the a La carte menu and there was some confusion regarding my broccoli starter but the food itself was very good. I had haddock and chips which was eclipsed. My husband had the Sunday roast which was also very good .

We were surprised how few diners were present compared to other festival visits. Pre theatre menu food was excellent and the head waiter very helpful and friendly .

The new decor is lovely. Creating a pleasant clean atmosphere. The staff were very nice and efficient. However our we had to wait nearly half an hour for an order for cheese and biscuits. We had to cancel as we were going somewhere else. The waiter was very aplogetic.

The food was very enjoyable but the restaurant had no atmosphere at all. There was only us and one other table in use the whole evening.

As the building is 500 yrs old there were some structural issues, we changed our table. Enjoyed delicious smoked salmon with capers & pickled shallots and a glass of white wine, chocolate brownie for pud. Great service. Historic interest throughout the building.

I booked for 5.30 and in fairness the restaurant was busy because of a pre theatre crowd. However the staff although pleasant and helpful were struggling to cope. I started with the pre theatre menu but the items I chose were off that night. I turned to the a la carte menu ( when they could eventually find one ) and chose sea bass. Strangely the sea bass came with new potatoes and two pieces of asparagus but on the side was a large dish of new potatoes. No one seemed to know why the extra potatoes had been served. The food was ok. The sauce to the sea bass was congealed and not very nice. When it came to pudding all my cutlery had disappeared but the pudding was served and the waiter disappeared without providing replacements. The bill was wrong and you came away with the overall impression that the restaurant needs better management. I would be reluctant to visit again
