This was one of the most awful dining experiences I’ve had in my 40 years living and working in london. And it was awful from start to finish. The plan was to find somewhere cozy but cute to host a book club discussion for myself and 7 friends. But it was also my birthday (which I had made clear on the booking but there was no mention not acknowledgment of this whatsoever - very unusual for a restaurant). Firstly it was impossible to book a table for 8. I tried to use the “events” email but they never replied. I called several times, no-one picked up the phone. I had one phone call where the lady accused me of lying about having emailed and in fact shouted at me. I was then told they could not book a table of 8 so I should book 2 tables of 4 which they would put next to each other. They didn’t - instead they cancelled one table of 4 (but then still insisted that we pay for 8 people). I had asked if there was flexibility in booking for afternoon tea or lunch in my booking request. Over the phone, I was told that would be fine and that we could choose on the day. When we got there, there was no flexibility and we were all forced to have afternoon tea!
Other things:
- we were not given spoons with which to eat some of the afternoon tea desserts so those were wasted
-unlike any other afternoon tea I’ve been to, finished sandwiches were not replenished
- we could not finish all the scones so we asked if we could take them away, we were told we could not
-we asked if we could split the bill manually because some people had ordered extra drinks - we were told that would not be possible (until we insisted)
-we never got any tea
- the staff were rude and unaccommodating
So all in all - it was horrendous and not somewhere I would ever recommend to anyone.
