The Ox Barn is a 56-seater destination restaurant under the direction of Head Chef, Charlie Hibbert. Rooted in a passion for the local land, food and entertaining, the carefully curated menus are farm-based and plant-inspired. His team and the gardeners at Thyme work together to select and grow the fruits, vegetables and herbs used to create his Modern British Countryside fare.

The nineteenth century former oxen house is the newest addition to the family of meticulously restored farm buildings. A state-of-the-art piece of agricultural architecture at its conception, Caryn Hibbert worked meticulously to preserve the soaring archways and original Cotswold stone rubble walls, to now house a modern, dining destination - including a contemporary bar and seven and a half metre Charvet open kitchen - to allow for an authentic, heritage-rich dining experience, enabled by today’s best culinary technologies.

                Ox Barn is a beautiful venue with fresh ingredients but underwhelming flavors and sloppy presentation. Our food was bland, with no acid notes, both under-salted and under-seasoned. The taramasalata was just a saucy blob with no body and plopped on the plate. The evening’s fish special was drowning in butter and smothered in bland capers. My duck’s spring onion vegetable side dish was also slathered in butter and over-cooked in a slimy pile. Our desserts were fine: a bland chocolate mousse and a rubbery blackberry jam custard, although I might have the exact offering wrong, which tasted amazing, but only when when we combined them on a single spoon. The host did bring out complementary coupes of champagne to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Our server was a sweet recent university grad who told us she was actually surprised to have gotten a job at an upscale restaurant and who had to check a note in her pocket to remember how to pronounce “beurre blanc.” Cocktails were pretty but unoriginal. Ox Barn is a costly average restaurant which must succeed more because it has a following from the chef’s positive reviews in the Times—why, I don’t know—than because the food is good. I don’t get it. The Mediterranean-inspired grounds are astoundingly beautiful!

                Fixed menu was fantastic price without compromise on quality. Service superb and informative. Environment was decedent and hygienic . Lovely garden and outdoor facilities. One negative the shop was very overpriced and lacking much variety.

                I had halibut which was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Wonderful atmosphere and venue and a great all round experience. We ate in the gorgeous garden. Great for a summers lunch/dinner

                This was our second visit and we enjoyed our visit as much as the first.. we were made to feel very welcome and were well looked after.. lovely food and very good service, in a beautiful relaxing setting.. We will definitely return and would happily recommend to family and friends..

                We went with a couple of friends and their daughter for lunch. Excellent food the only issue was that they forgot my husbands starter but in line with a great restaurant they didn’t charge him for starter or main course. Second time we have been and it didn’t disappoint. The dessert - soft meringue with blackberry ice cream was superb. Can’t wait to go back.
