Why The North Coal? The concept was created by the feeling of being away from city life with family and friends. For us, that’s Northern Ontario, but as lucky as we are to experience that way of life, not everyone is. Our mission is to provide that feeling regardless of your surroundings.

    We love it here and go there all the time. That said, our last experience was not a good one. They took our order after we’d been there 45 minutes, then the kitchen list the order. It was my daughter’s birthday…and we had to leave after 1.5 hours because we had another engagement and they hadn’t even started making the food. This place would rock if they could solve the problem of slow service and miscommunications with the kitchen.

    I found everything to be just average. Nothing stood out about this meal. Service was very good, sat on the patio but had. dog at the table behind us that growled or barked at every other dog on the street walking by. I love dogs but it was distracting.

    I generally never am disappointed. Menu is great etc. only issue is OpenTable and reservations. We also try to get 6-8pm for patio and nothing available. Then we arrive and there is never anyone in the patio section for the time slots. Could they all be last minute cancellations? Strange. I see a lot of walk ups turned away due to claims of reservations for unfilled tables - again with time slots I tried to reserve for patio. Something is up. I think turning away walk ups for non committed reservations is bad practice in long run but isn’t my business so good luck. Also when we booked our OpenTable, we were directed to a patio seat that was in the sun but saw unused patio seats under the umbrella. My spouse was feeling a burn in the neck so the host who seated us didn’t really have a clear answer - just said they’re reserved and when I asked “we are reserved too”… she looked confused. Is there a pecking order on time of booking and such? My view is if you have guests coming with a reservation, you either be absolutely sure the other patio seats are definitely still confirmed or offer the choice to those showing up on time and ready to pay for a meal. Just my two cents. The last time we visited, we were told reservations for tables. We sat inside an entire 1.5 hours and no one showed up for the patio seats. Again, something isn’t working according to plan. Take care to your committed and on time guests who are ready to eat and order. Beyond this - food and ambience is great. No complaints. Our server this time around was very kind and funny and accommodated us with seating under the umbrella so my wife wouldn’t feel the neck burn and discomfort. That was very kind and helpful of her. Extra tip for her - and only her I hope because she listened to our request with empathy.

    Had an amazing time for happy hour on a patio yesterday. Staff was beyond nice and food was great. Can’t beat 50% off wine during a LCBO strike.

    The North Coal has a cozy cottage atmosphere completed with campfires in gorgeous scenery playing on tvs. Servers are friendly and cheerful. Food is delicious with excellent descriptions on the menu. We will be back to try more entrees! We can recommend both the included sides as the shoestring fries are crispy and the coalslaw is creamy and fresh. They also serve beautiful hand crafted cocktails to enhance your experience:)

    Second time visiting the restaurant and the food quality was poor! Small portions and not a great value for purchase. Ambience was nice, but not enough to bring me in again!

    Ambience is so welcoming as are the staff. Our server Laiken was amazing. Food was good. The Cauliflower appetizer delicious. Enough food to take home a doggy bag. This is my favourite neighbourhood restaurant. It is a jewel in our downtown restaurant row.

    Great place in downtown Burlington to grab a meal and drinks. The service is always excellent. They have a delicious uncomplicated menu with something for everyone. Outside patio or inside—always love dining here.

    We were very pleased to get a call shortly before our reservation to say that they could accomodate us inside. Our reservation had been for outside but the weather had turned cool and cloudy. The service was very attentive and the food was delicious. The complimentary dessert for our daughter's birthday was very much appreciated.
