The Lexington is more than a restaurant, it’s an institution. Located on the corner of Lexington Parkway and Grand Avenue, this St. Paul community was the most fashionable at the turn of the 19th century. The St. Paul elite lived just blocks away and the first electric trolley brought visitors up and down Grand Avenue. The Lexington opened in 1935, after the end of prohibition, and was a popular neighborhood bar to gather and socialize. Previously operating as a speakeasy, the expansive wood panels were perfect for hiding a little booze and one can only imagine the shenanigans going on beyond the hidden staircase behind the coat check. For decades following, The Lex, as it’s called by locals and enthusiasts alike, was the place to be seen; business dealings, cocktail hours, and milestone celebrations were a regular occurrence for St. Paul socialites.

It is a beautiful room and the food was delicious. One of us had the Wellington Meatloaf. It looked so good. Another had the pork chop which was excellent and another had chicken pot pie. I had scallops. All very good. Service was excellent as well.

I do think your kitchen ought to be more careful when putting cheese on food that was requested as "no cheese" due to an allergy, then waiting 20 more minutes for the order to come out. This all happening when the other guests are having their dinner. I might add that the split order was also faulty in the way it was split - horizontally, so that all the herbs were at the bottom where the flavor was. The top half was just the basics. The order should have been mixed up, then split.

The Lexington was a good visual experience, but the food I expected a little bit more. The walleye appetizer was bland and dry. For the main dish I had the swordfish and it was good, but it was so tiny compared to any other restaurants swordfish portion. The birthday Sunday was just sad, just vanilla ice cream with some sprinkles. Maybe throw a piece of fruit on it or maybe a dab of caramel or chocolate. And last my drink a number nine old-fashioned was so damn sweet I could barely even finish half of it. I really wanted to like it there.

Excellent food as usual. Very attentive wait staff. Our guests ordered a second espresso martini after the first one was so good. A different bar tender made the second drinks which were not good, BUT the restaurant made it right with new drinks. We will be back.
