Situated in the historic village of Aylesford, The Hengist is a modern restaurant and bar, a short walk from the river's edge.

The 16th Century building stands with original features, offering a perfect balance of elegance, heritage and modernity all surrounded by manicured gardens.

The Hengist offers a range of dining options including a casual dining option on the ground floor and two more formal dining rooms upstairs along with outside terrace dining inour gardens.

We offer seasonal 'a la carte and 'set' menus along with a 'Sunday lunch' menu. All of our dishes are freshly made to order with locally sourced ingredients.

I booked for my wife’s birthday and asked for to be seated in a nice area , so we sat by the entrance !!! Asked to be moved so sat next to the bar, not ideal! Half the menu missing, no desert menu, only thing I can say is the cocktails are good.

Friendly staff, well cooked breakfast and lovely cocktails, YES cocktails with breakfast, will definitely be visiting again

A great night had by all: so happy it’s reopened and a great atmosphere. The cocktails were brilliant and I highly recommend the hengist burger

Absolutely beautiful Sunday Roast! So lovely to have a Vegetarian option that’s tasty and different rather than the usual boring nut roast! Partner had the chicken and that was lovely - make sure you get the cauliflower cheese side, it was the best I’ve ever had.. lovely atmosphere, beautiful Decor, staff were fab. Look forward to returning and taking advantage of the lovely garden in the sun!

I was keen to support our local restaurant as the their instagram was so cool and inviting. Unfortunately, our experience was not as good. The cocktails look amazing and they are clearly spending a lot of time on them but everything else is compromised because of it. Our drinks came after 30 minutes - the wine cooler placed on the table with the glasses - so we poured ourselves. We ordered our starters and mains - our waiter said the chef wouldn’t be happy because we ordered 3 different styles of chips! Our starters were ok but our mains were really not good at all- when we were asked if we wanted anything we asked for the dessert menu to be told the kitchen had closed and did so at 9pm. Our table was at 8! Just doesn’t make sense. It could be wonderful but the food needs to been taken to a much better level and the staff need training. I really hope it improves so we can return and support.

We visited Hengist while in Maidstone area, following a "Google" search. We found the location and directions easy to follow. Upon entering the reception area, we felt the restaurant to be welcoming. We were shown to our table and even confirmed if we were happy with the location The menu was clearly laid out and easy to follow, however the true impression was delivered with the Cocktail menu and choice, with a true element of theatre attached to the "Picnic in the Park" that my wife was thoroughly impressed with, and was matched with the flavour of the cocktail. We opted for the Tapas/Small plates options and were really impressed with the flavour, size and variety that we were presented with. When it comes to the hosting, Liz, Kieran and the rest of their team, were attentive, personable and thoroughly engaging during our time at the restaurant, taking time to show my wife to the upstairs bar area. Without a doubt, we will be re-visiting when we are next in the area. Actually, we were that impressed, we will potentially visit the area just to enjoy a meal, drink and ambiance of this brilliantly laid out, planned and enjoyable restaurant.

Appreciate its early days with new owners however for what is being charged the food needs to be a lot better quality. The portions extremely small as well! No sauce with the steak (None offered and advised non available it was quite dry so was the chicken dish one of us had) The steak itself was so small you could hardly see it! Definetly not worth £28!! Triple cooked chips were undercooked. The special pizza for £17 was less than average very overpriced for what it was! Staff pleasant but very inexperienced. If your going to charge top prices get a good chef and provide that reflects the prices you expect your customers to pay!

The food was amazing. I decided to have the tapas and wasn’t disappointed. Waitress was very polite and courteous. Although the restaurant was quiet, the music and atmosphere was very relaxing. Will definitely be returning.
