The Griswold Inn is an inn and restaurant located in the historic seaport village of Essex. The Gris, as it is affectionately known, has been in continous operation since 1776.

`Currently we are offering dine in, dine out, and Gris To Go! Inside, guests may enjoy dining in historic, art-filled rooms which exude character, charm and tradition. Seating for the alfresco experience is available on a first-come, first-served basis, with the exception of larger parties of 7 or more which may be made by calling 860.767.1776.

The Inn boasts a wine list consistently recognized by Wine Spectator with the prestigious Award of Excellence; Food & Wine and Travel + Leisure have recently recognized the Inn's restaurant as "Connecticut's coziest" and it is included in Patricia Schulz's "1000 Places to See Before You Die". The Griswold Inn is also the recipient of Connecticut's Highest Award for Hospitality. The best of old and new meet here.

DECEMBER is a wonderful time to experience The Griswold Inn! With our “halls” fully decked, the “Rockwellian vibe” is in the air. The month-long celebration features a Holiday Bill of Fare with game selections as well as Gris Classics. Each evening, while served by costumed wait staff, The Royal Court Singers perform seasonal classics table-side.

My date and I enjoyed dining at the Griswold Inn. The server was terrific. It is fun to dine at such an historic building. The food was very good especially the maple glazed salmon special and the caprese salad (also a special). The tomatoes and basil were local adding to the taste. We really enjoyed our visit.

Excellent service on a Sunday afternoon. Our server was very attentive and helpful. Our meals were delicious and arrived quite quickly. We loved the atmosphere and would definitely return.

The “Gris” is an awesome choice. Not every server is a lifetime experienced waiter. 😬. We enjoyed our meal there. The staff honored my request for searing. For that alone, we are pleased. No single restaurant will deliver unbroken flawless service. That’s logical. The “Gris?” Is a special place and should be granted some “grace”. Our experience was “good”. Oftentimes? Is has been great. 😊

I will preface this by saying that I LOVE the Gris and I've never in many decades had a bad or iffy meal. However the other day I tried the "Steak Frites" and the cut of meat was subpar. Half gristle. and tough as shoe leather. I could only eat about 1/3 of it. And it came with roasted potatoes, not frites. They really need to up their game with this one since there are a lot of very good steak frites in the area. Next time I visit I'll be back to the old consistently good favorites, clam chowder and fried shrimp.

This place is a SCENE (especially on a Saturday night in mid-August). It is very large but beyond crowded. Chaos reins with noise level, once the live music began, off the charts (but fun). Our server, Ally, was great and the prime rib outstanding.

Table next to us had someone talking very loudly throughout the meal. Took away from experience. Otherwise all very good/ food, service, and ambience.

Kelly was a great server. She was very friendly and personable. She made sure our food was the way we ordered and made great substitution recommendations. The food was well cooked I got the ribs which were definitely a bit different than I usually have them but had a great taste and texture. My partner got the scallops which he said were cooked well. The special tomato mozzarella salad was awesome. Loved the sticky toffee pudding and the mud pie. The environment was very lively. The bus staff was very attentive with water (I think his name was Jacob was very quick to fill a glass and clear plates). Another female bus staff was also wonderful. Overall a great experience love how the place just fits in with the vibe of the town.

The menu has a nice variety of appetizers, salads, entrees, and desserts on the regular menu, and also have a tap room menu. Reservations are generally best to be assured of seating. Gluten-free options are available; other allergies may be addressed as well. Special requests are fulfilled for substitution of vegetables. Wine and drink listings are extensive, including a wide variety of beers, some on tap. Revolutionary Ale was exceptional! Great choices are the baby back ribs - a large portion with delicious dry rub; New York Strip was beautifully cooked to order - so flavorful. The salmon is outstanding. A nice pace for the meal and wait staff were quite attentive.
