The Griswold Inn is an inn and restaurant located in the historic seaport village of Essex. The Gris, as it is affectionately known, has been in continous operation since 1776.

`Currently we are offering dine in, dine out, and Gris To Go! Inside, guests may enjoy dining in historic, art-filled rooms which exude character, charm and tradition. Seating for the alfresco experience is available on a first-come, first-served basis, with the exception of larger parties of 7 or more which may be made by calling 860.767.1776.

The Inn boasts a wine list consistently recognized by Wine Spectator with the prestigious Award of Excellence; Food & Wine and Travel + Leisure have recently recognized the Inn's restaurant as "Connecticut's coziest" and it is included in Patricia Schulz's "1000 Places to See Before You Die". The Griswold Inn is also the recipient of Connecticut's Highest Award for Hospitality. The best of old and new meet here.

DECEMBER is a wonderful time to experience The Griswold Inn! With our “halls” fully decked, the “Rockwellian vibe” is in the air. The month-long celebration features a Holiday Bill of Fare with game selections as well as Gris Classics. Each evening, while served by costumed wait staff, The Royal Court Singers perform seasonal classics table-side.

Service was excellent. My husband’s prime rib arrived cold. My scallops were ok, not very flavorful. The beet salad was good. The carrot cake was exceptional!

We were there for our anniversary and it was the first time at the Griswold Inn. Our waitress Chanalese was very knowledgeable and made excellent recommendations. The dinners were delicious and of ample portion. To our surprise, the local Coast Guard choir performed and later that night a fabulous 60’s band.

We were disappointed tonight , we were seated to closely together when other tables were open . And the food was just ok usually it’s outstanding

Truly a unique experience, like dining back in time. The clam chowder was amazing! Loved every minute of our time there.

The Griswold Inn is one of our favorite places. The food is very good, the service is outstanding. The roast beef, clam chowder, and ribs are great!

My date and I enjoyed dining at the Griswold Inn. The server was terrific. It is fun to dine at such an historic building. The food was very good especially the maple glazed salmon special and the caprese salad (also a special). The tomatoes and basil were local adding to the taste. We really enjoyed our visit.

Excellent service on a Sunday afternoon. Our server was very attentive and helpful. Our meals were delicious and arrived quite quickly. We loved the atmosphere and would definitely return.
