Restaurant too dark, menu fonts too small had to squint Snacks were good Main course lamb was tough and none of the food was hot just warm but the courgettes were very cold as if never heated. I thought 12 1/2 % a bit steep

Friendly, welcoming. Menu not too long as all food is fresh. We had the sea bass which was great. Food is good and well presented. Enthusiastic team. What more could we ask for?

Charming restaurant with candle lit tables. Fabulous new takes on delicious classics. They were a little overwhelmed with only two servers in the entire place for drinks and food orders. Enjoyed it immensely.

Don’t let any bad reviews put you off, we thought the place was charming, yes it’s old but has bags of character and it’s very comfortable. Candlelit and cosy. The food is imaginative and really tasty. Well seasoned and good size portions. Lovely bread too. Well done chef and team!

Just outstanding, everything we ate was fantastic. We really liked the atmosphere which was laid back but the high standards were clear from when we arrived. We had the weekend sharer which was amazing in taste and presentation and loved the option to order it for the table. We are Mersea people and it was great to see Mersea Oysters on the menu, serving them with the pickled gooseberries is the best way I’ve ever eaten one and safe to say we’ve had a few in our time! We can’t wait to return and bring friends & family with us. Thanks for a great dining experience.

I’m a little bit in love with this place - this time a late solo Sunday lunch - next week returning with a group for a birthday lunch. More wines by the glass would be good but it’s broadly Ace.

Absolutely delicious dinner. Cods roe gougeres were divine. Also outstanding were the rhubarb sours, stuffed courgette flowers, pork chops and strawberry pavlova.

Starting with the positives- the food was really tasty, and well presented. Menu was exciting, seasonal and largely local ingredients which is really pleasing. I was disappointed that there was no acknowledgement of my friends birthday, as I had put on the reservation. Now I’m not expecting anything for free, but a ‘happy birthday, thank you for choosing us to celebrate your day’ costs nothing. We had travelled 70 miles. Other places have offered a glass of bubbles, a candle in some ice cream. I was also disappointed that the Cherry Bakewell tart didn’t have icing, I would have been ok with this, had I not seen a gentlemen 2 hours later with a slice with icing! Furthermore, we were sat waiting ages for coffee/tea order, and then rushed as there was another person wanting our table. These are small things that need to be worked on, as like I say, the food was really good
