The Godfather, a Balistreri restaurant, is an Italian monument in downtown San Diego providing authentic cuisine from the hills of Italy. Established in 1974, The Godfather is a sophisticated and classy establishment that centers around generational recipes from both Northern and Southern Italy. Over the years, the quality of food and standard of service has never declined and thus garnered The Godfather a national recognition as one of the top twenty-five Italian restaurants in the entire nation. This restaurant, The Godfather, is tucked inconspicuously in a small shopping center with no other restaurants, so when we walked inside to a dimly lit, lively dining room, we were quite surprised. We were seated promptly, and then given a plate of fried zucchini on the house, and it was hot and delicious! All of our food was delicious, and the service was wonderful.

The food was fabulous as always. We went there as part of Restaurant Week but have gone there many times before. Everything was perfect except the service. We were seated then no one came to talk with us for at least 10 minutes. I'm not sure if Ricardo was being tasked with some other party, but the middle of the main room was empty, so we know they weren't that busy with the regulars. We were given a menu and left alone again. When he came to take our order, we said we were here bc of Rest. Wk. He kinda grabbed our menus, frustrated, and brought back the special menus for that purpose. Odd. Other than that, he was the perfect waiter. Comps to the Water Person for helping us out in the meantimes. He was busy - a hustler!! We'll be back with friends soon. Buon appetito!

Went for restaurant week and enjoyed a first time meal. Food was good and really like the lasagna and my dad loved the tirimisu. One note, the meatball appetizer on the RW menu clearly said it was served crostini. It was not and when we asked one waiter said the appetizer doesn’t come with bread and a different one finally brought us regular hot bread. The complimentary zucchini are great as well, just need some ranch or blue cheese. The best part of the whole experience is they give you your own Parmesan cheese dispenser. I wish every Italian place did that.

Have wanted to try for a long time. So glad we finally did! Celebrated friend's birthday. Noted friend's birthday on reservation. Seated at a two top on a wall next to what seemed to be the intersection of the entrance, the kitchen and several large tables. I hesitated but didn't ask for different table. Lots of traffic. Will ask for a booth next time or a table near the back. Lively and fun ambiance though. Several large parties celebrating. Enjoyed the energy. Excellent service all around! Very attentive and timely. Caprese salad, delicious. We each ordered a special - the seafood pasta special was tasty with generous portions of seafood. The branzino special with vegetables and risotto was very flavorful, the fish delicious. Large portions all around - could have shared one meal but enjoyed the leftovers today... Delicious! Our server nicely remembered the birthday and delivered our desserts with a birthday candle as the piano player placed "Happy Birthday." Low key and classy. Much appreciated.

So nice for a quiet birthday. Service and food were excellent. The 3rd year in a row to celebrate birthday with friends there.

Overall the food was good. The zucchini appetizer was lightly breaded and tasty with the marinara sauce we asked for. My fettuccine bolognese was a bit too al Dente for my taste. Very sticky. My partner had the salmon with vodka sauce and was pleased with it. We topped it off with crème brûlée and lemon cake. Overall a very good experience.

Overall, a disappointing experience. The caprese salad was hands down the worst I’ve ever had! The tomatoes were not ripe and to make it worse had been refrigerated therefore rendering the dish flavor less. I expected much better from a storied Italian restaurant. An Italian restaurant that can’t get the tomatoes right doesn’t bode well. For a main I had the short rib ravioli which was tasty, but not exceptional. My colleague had the clams and linguine which they enjoyed. The prices are reasonable and the old school atmosphere is appealing. All things considered a decidedly average experience.
