Here, at Sonning in Berkshire, our hotel and restaurant sits by The Thames, at the point where the river is at its most beautiful.
Walk into the cosy bar and you’ll be greeted by a French Horn tradition, the sight of ducks roasting in front of an open fire. Everything is as it should be in this family-owned English institution, run by the Emmanuel family since 1972. Life is good here.
Our Head Chef Josiane Diaga and team select the best seasonal ingredients and treat them with respect. Honest, classical dishes are complemented by a carefully curated wine cellar which, for example, features wines from every Burgundy village. Service is impeccable and the dining room one of the prettiest on the Thames.

    Our group of four had a delightful experience at the French Horn. All aspects were excellent - the food, the service (especially Elaine), and the ambience. My elderly aunt is on a walker and Elaine made the evening extremely comfortable for her - opening doors, moving any obstacles, and generally making us all feel welcome with her sparkling demeanour. A nice varied menu, with everything cooked as ordered. And we had very nice views of the beautiful grounds. We couldn’t want for anything more. Granted, an expensive experience, but well worth the price.

    You can never go wrong with a night out at the French Horn. The personal touch of management, the superbly trained staff, and beautiful location makes dining here an experience above enjoying a meal. The food is impeccable and the perfect balance of elevated cuisine without being too frilly. Highly recommend this special spot.
