Set in the heart of downtown, across from the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, the “new” Essex will continue to offer the progressive, modern, approachable cuisine that has made it a top restaurant in the region. Whether it’s a pre-theater dinner, a casual gathering with friends, or a tasting menu for a special evening, guests can gather at The Essex to create memories with family and friends while enjoying excellent cuisine.

The Essex menu showcases modern American cuisine that draws inspiration from the land, sea and deep heritage of the Connecticut River Valley, using the freshest locally sourced products available from farm and sea. All will inspire an ever-changing menu of progressive interpretations of timeless dishes.

    One of our favorite spots. We take our boat several times a season and stay at Saybrook Point Resort and Marina. At least once every trip we need to go the The Essex. Last night we did the Chef’s 7 course table. We have done the chef’s table before and it is always different and superb. We have eaten off the menu and it is truly amazing. Hats off the the chefs and servers. A wonderful night

    The tart was very tasty, but we had to ask for a knife to cut the pastry. We were very satisfied with the soup, rolls, drinks and our entrees. Hot items were served “hot.” Our servers were very attentive!

    Our first time dining at the Essex while on vacation from Scottsdale. Fantastic craft cocktails and meals. The ribeye was perfectly prepared; the mussels were terrific, as was the sea bass. Lobster Risotto was a little too rich for my father's palette. Very well managed and exceptional service. Highly recommend!

    We are frequent guests and are continuously delighted to dine at Essex. The food, service, and ambience is consistently outstanding. We love this restaurant.

    Second visit to The Essex prior to attending a show across the street. Outside ding was very pleasant - wait staff was fabulous. Unusual menu with no ‘standards’ such as a garden or Caesar salad. That said, our dinners were fresh and flavorful.

    Sat at the chef’s counter for a tasting. Had a fantastic meal, all four of us loved it. Accommodations were made for a pregnant member of the party, one of which was her favorite course! Colt and the kitchen team did a great job, and service from Peter was stellar as always. Threw the bartender Dillon a few curveballs, but he nailed every drink.
