In sleepy Fairlight, on the edge of the Firehills, The Cove is an independently run freehouse serving locals, wanderers and gastronauts alike. Halfway between Hastings and Rye, The Cove is the perfect stop after a walk across the local beaches and coastal paths of East Sussex. We have a fire for the winter nights, a garden for summer days, and a friendly bar waiting to welcome you.

Originally a hotel, the building sat empty for several years until 2022, when the Cove was renovated, restored and reopened with a new lease of life. It has quickly gained a reputation for excellent, elevated pub food with local chef and restauranteur Nick Hales leading the kitchen.

In 2023 it was featured on The Times 50 Best Summer Pubs, and given a glowing review by Grace Dent in The Guardian Observer.

We had pre booked a table, which upon arrival was right next to the bar, meaning every time someone went to the bar we were bumped into. We even tried to reposition ourselves to stop this from happening, however, this then put us right in the wall way., We waited 45 minutes for food which was served cold and of a small portion considering the price. A 12% service charge was added to the bill, which I asked to be removed, taking the bill to £60.70 for two mains and 3 drinks, one of which was half pint of beer. No apology for the cold food or the wait. It was so loud, I could hardly hear my partner talk. Overall, very disappointing and won’t be returning.

Glad we booked a table. Very busy and loud at times but it was a Friday evening and The Cove is very popular. Thankfully the tv showing the Euros was upstairs so this did not affect our dining experience. The staff were excellent and the food was very good. A bit pricey but everything is nowadays. I would definitely recommend a visit

Fabulous food and wonderful service. Very knowledgeable team. The menu and winelist demonstrates that they clearly know what they are doing.

The Cove is a little hidden gem . We had the Wednesday steak offer for two with a free bottle of wine . The steak was to die for ! The staff were lovely, attentive and friendly . Such a lovely restaurant, that’s a little different to sit and eat in . Highly recommend
