The Courtyard offers a warm farmhouse feel in the heart of Northumberland. Situated in Pegswood, the historic building which dates back to early-1900s, sits on the main route to Longhirst, once a home of. “Old King Cole”. Steeped in history, and influenced by the bistros of rural Italy, The Courtyard is certainly a place to visit.

Matt Hudson, head chef, brings a wealth of experience and a stellar reputation, having made a significant impact in the culinary world with his exceptional talent. His innovative and flavourful dishes have not only delighted diners but also earned him numerous accolades. Under his leadership, two gastro pubs in the North East were recognised in The Guardian's prestigious list of Best Gastro Pubs.

Matt is an ethical chef that likes to cook head to tail, leaving no waste from an animal. His commitment to using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients aligns perfectly with our philosophy of providing high-quality, sustainable dining experiences.

This is a great addition to Pegswood. We live a very walkable mile away and it was a great reward at the end of our walk. To have the door opened from the inside to be greeted with a big smile and welcome set a very positive and friendly tone. We had Sunday lunch and it was right up there with the very best. We had the beef and the lamb. Both were very flavoursome, were accompanied by a wide selection of vegetables, mashed and roast potatoes and a perfectly cooked Yorkshire laid on a perfect gravy. The wine mark-ups look reasonable enough and if the bottle we had is anything to go by, good value for money The puddings were exceptionally presented and satisfying and the espresso martinis we ended with were very recommendable. There are plenty of waiting staff so service is very good - efficient and friendly without being over-attentive. I can see this being a regular Sunday lunch destination for us.

First visit and won’t be the last. Lovely building and interior done to high standards. Friendly, professional and efficient staff. Lovely food and wine. A great addition to the area.

First time dining here. Setting and service were brilliant. Our main courses were amazing. The puds were a little disappointing. The best one was the sticky toffee. My only feedback was it was just too big. It’s the first time I was beaten by one. However minor comments. Overall we were very happy and have already booked to go back. Give it a try x

Nice new cafe, bar bistro in Pegswood. We had 2 starters and 2 main courses that were very tasty. Decent value for money; will return.

Amazing meal so tasty best meal I have had in a long time. Service was incredibly attentive. However it was abit chilly and we sat by the door and the heating wasn't on. So by end we were cold

Wow 🤩 my good friend and I came for the first time for a late lunch today . We had the chicken supreme and the custard tart / white chocolate bread and butter pudding . I can honestly say , this is the best meal we have had in a very long time . Absolutely superb !! The service was brilliant and all staff were so friendly and welcoming . We have already booked for New Years Eve we were so impressed . Thankyou , we will be back and we will be bringing our friends. :)

Such a great find in an unexpected location. The Courtyard delivered on every aspect. Friendly staff a great ambiance and interesting and exciting food. My friends and I all enjoyed our lunch and we all agreed we would be going back sooner rather than later!!

Restaurant very busy service good but slow. Food excellent. A little bit noisy because of outside building work. It was quite cold in the restaurant.

The restaurant interior is charming with a welcoming and nicely designed atmosphere. However the seating arrangement could use some improvement, tables are packed too closely together making it feel a bit crowded. Service was average at best. Our starters were forgotten entirely and after waiting patiently we sat for around 40 minutes before our mains arrived. The meal offered a great selection of vegetables all cooked just right. The meats were well prepared with the chicken standing out in particular. The sticky toffee pudding was excellent but the pavlova was a letdown, falling short of its enticing presentation online.
