Welcome to the Chequers Inn, a unique Sussex gastopub with featuring in the AA, Michilin and MasterChefs of Great Britain guides. We have an outstanding reputation for fine food, excellent wines and handpicked local ales.

Our menus are simple yet delicious. We offer a contemporary take on classic British and French-inspired cuisine, with every dish freshly-prepared in our country kitchen.

    We’ve always enjoyed eating at the chequers, however, this time we had to wait a long time before our drink order was taken, we ordered our food at the same time and asked for a jug of water, drinks took ages to come and once again had to ask for the water, starters arrived, had to ask for the water again. Had barely finished starters and the plates had not been cleared and they brought 1 main meal out, again had to ask for the water, it was another 10 minutes before the other 3 mains arrived, once again had to ask for the water, no one asked if we wanted any sauces or more drinks. Water arrived! I had the mussel’s which were gritty and in a flavourless sauce. The bavette steaks were good. Overall, based on previous much enjoyed visits, was very disappointed this time.

    Well above average gastropub. Menu somewhat limited and no fillet steak despite being on the menu. Always serves fish special on the bone. Drink prices astronomical

    Great country pub, top class food and all accompanied by warm, friendly service and fair pricing. Would be hard to beat.

    Totally spoiled for choice on the menu for all courses. After finally making a decision the plates did not disappoint. Very tasty, excellently prepared and presented food worthy of indulgence.

    Sadly what 2 of us wanted as a main had run out. Generally the food was lovely but not as outstanding as meals we have had before in the Chequers. Perhaps because it was Sunday?

    We booked a table last minute for a 2pm lunch for two. The pub has a lovely garden and outside seating area but unfortunately it was too cold to sit outside. The inside has a lot of character. The food was of good quality with generous portions. We would definitely return if we are in the area again.
