The Canteen is a full-service neighbourhood restaurant in Downtown Dartmouth, serving up chef-inspired seasonal fare for lunch, brunch and dinner. At the helm in the kitchen is award-winning chef and co-owner Renee Lavallee. Her seasonal menus are influenced by classic French, Italian and traditional Nova Scotian cuisine – with a little bit of Renée’s magic thrown in. Signature items include The Canteen Burger, The Crobster Roll, Seafood Chowder and more.

    Love the cabbage bacon soup! Renee’s salad was super tasty but was slightly less in substance (maybe more chick peas?). Always excellent overall!

    The staff and the food was perfect. I put in my note that it was our anniversary and they treated us with extra special care. I am very grateful for a wonderful date night with my wife at such an amazing establishment. I would’ve given a perfect review except if you were hard of hearing at all, the volume can get quite loud and I’m not sure there’s much to be done about it however, that was the only slight problem for otherwise perfect evening If you’re looking to have a night out and a special event, this is the place to go in Dartmouth.

    We always gravitate to The Canteen when we want a nice evening out with a great meal. They always deliver. Never had anything but great food, and the staff are the best (server Michael is our favourite).

    Saw the falafel bowl on Insta yesterday ... had it for lunch today. It was delicious - as great as the picture. Enjoyed a creme brûlée for desert. Always have a wonderful time at the Canteen, food is consistently outstanding and service is wonderful.

    I have never eaten anything like this before. The levels of tastes, textures, temperatures were unbelievable! Visually it was outstanding! And the cocktails were brilliant too!
